Watson crashes out of Madrid Open

British number two Heather Watson could not use her lucky loser place to her advantage as she lost to Australian Daria Gavrilova at the Madrid Open.
Watson, who lost to Croatia’s Mirjana Lucic-Baroni in the qualifying round on Saturday, but won a place in the main draw after Yulia Putintseva withdrew through illness.
But it wasn’t to be for Watson as she crashed to a 7-5 6-4 defeat to Gavrilova in the first round on Sunday.
Former British number one Laura Robson will face two-time Australian Open champion Victoria Azarenka later on Sunday afternoon, while Johanna Konta takes on France’s Caroline Garcia in her opening match.
British number three Naomi Broady failed to qualify for the Open in Saturday's final qualifying round, losing 3-6 6-3 6-3 to Monica Puig.
