Lucas Braathen is one of the most promising youngsters on the alpine skiing circuit and he won his second World Cup event of the season on Sunday. He triumped in the Giant Slalom in the Italian Alps at Alta Badia, pipping Marco Odermatt and Henrik Kristoffersen to the top spot, though Switzerland's Odermatt retained the overall lead by a significant margin.

Top 3 run as Braathen nets second World Cup win of the season

Norway’s Lucas Braathen won the World Cup Giant Slalom event in Alta Badia on Sunday afternoon.
Braathen was in third place after the first run and while it had appeared that Marco Odermatt would claim the title after coming back from his first effort of ninth, the 22-year-old pipped him late on. The win is Braathen's second victory of the season after winning the slalom in Val d'Isere.
Second spot went to Henrik Kristoffersen, who could not match Braathen’s combined time of 2:36.35s.
Zan Kranjec had led after the first run, but could only finish in fifth place.
The Slovenian put down a time of 1:18.49 seconds in the Italian Alps which nobody else was able to beat.
30-year-old Kranjec is a Giant Slalom specialist and boasts a silver medal from the 2022 Winter Olympics, and was hoping to make it his third World Cup win of his career, and his 11th podium.
Switzerland's Odermatt, enjoying an exceptional season, was ninth in the first heat, with Alexandre Pinturault fifth. Braathen was third.
Ahead of the weekend he stood in second place for Giant Slalom so far this term, and a win keeps him in contention for his best-ever season finish, having never finished higher than fourth.
The win saw Braathen move into fourth place in the overall standings, with Kranjec still able to move into joint-second alongside Kristoffersen.
Odermatt remains on top of the standings, sitting 260 points clear of second place.
