There is nothing better than a dog interrupting sport. The latest proof of that statement came at the men’s World Cup super-G event in Bormio, where winner Marco Odermatt was overshadowed by a gleeful hound. Ed Drake in the Eurosport commentary box failed to contain his hysterics as the dog evaded marshals and then set about trying to beat Odermatt’s time at the top of the standings.

Runaway dog races down ski slope after evading marshals

A runaway dog delighted the athletes and crowd at the super-G in Bormio after breaking free of its owner and sprinting down the slope.
The World Cup race was interrupted for over five minutes after the gleeful hound evaded marshals to get on the course, before attempting to take the turns as his four legs comically slipped on the snow.
Race organisers desperately tried to prevent the dog's assault on Marco Odermatt's leading time, but were unable to capture the nimble-pawed canine as he skilfully continued down the mountain.
“He just managed to fly his way down the San Pietro, four-wheel grip not even able to keep the dog on course,” said Ed Drake in the Eurosport commentary box, barely able to suppress his laughter.
“He’s doing the whole length of the San Pietro and the rest of the way down. The dog is stealing the show in Bormio!”
Our brave hero soon tired on an unforgiving course and eventually found a gap in the fence to disappear from the spotlight, safe in the knowledge their cold encounter with fame would not be forgotten.
“He’s running out of gas. We talk about the athletes running out of legs, this guy’s got a couple of extra legs and he’s still exhausted,” added Drake.
Switzerland’s Odermatt blew apart the competition to take a commanding victory in Italy, finishing 0.64 seconds ahead of Austria’s Vincent Kriechmayr. It was his 16th World Cup win and his sixth in super-G.
The dog, sadly, was a DNF.
