Slovenia's Ilka Stuhec claimed a downhill World Cup victory in Italy at the slopes of Cortina d'Ampezzo. Stuhec finished second in Friday's downhill event but then went one better on Saturday. Second place was taken by Norway’s Kajsa Vickhoff Lie, ahead of Elena Curtoni of Italy in the final podium place. Mikaela Shiffrin's next record-breaking attempt will now be on Sunday in the super-G.

‘Full control’ - Stuhec lays down time to beat at Cortina d'Ampezzo downhill

Ilka Stuhec secured victory in the downhill in Italy at Cortina d’Ampezzo as Mikaela Shiffrin failed to break the record for World Cup victories.
The Slovenian won with a time of 1:04.73s that was unbeatable by the rest of Saturday’s challengers.
Norway’s Kajsa Vickhoff Lie took second, 0.26s behind, with Italian Elena Curtoni a third of a second behind.
Switzerland’s experienced racer Lara Gut-Behrami was fourth, with disappointment for fifth-placed Shiffrin.
The American started the day on 82 World Cup victories, with another win required to break the record in women’s Alpine skiing.
She is currently tied with her former US team-mate Lindsey Vonn, and finished fourth on Friday in an earlier downhill event. Stuhec finished second in that run.
On Sunday she will compete for the record again when she takes part in the super-G event.
Vonn had broken Annemarie Moser-Proll’s previous record of 62 eight years ago, also at Cortina d’Ampezzo, and had her career cut short when injury forced her to retire four years later.
If Shiffrin remains in the sport for the rest of the season or beyond she is likely to take the overall record for World Cup wins in both women’s and men’s Alpine skiing.
That stands at 86 and is held by Ingemar Stenmark who competed in the 1970s and 1980s before his retirement aged 33 at the end of the 1989 season.
