Mikaela Shiffrin has always been one to explain how she is feeling and that’s what she did when taking to social media on Tuesday night, following her historic 83rd Alpine Skiing World Cup win. Shiffrin stood on the top step of the podium in Kronplatz, knowing she is just three victories away from matching Ingemar Stenmark’s all-time wins record for men and women.

All the key wins from Shiffrin's record-breaking 83 victories

Mikaela Shiffrin took to social media with a heartfelt message about her mindset following the American’s historic 83rd Alpine Skiing World Cup victory.
Shiffrin is now the most successful female skier of all-time and is just three wins away from Ingemar Stenmark’s record of 86, which is the most World Cup victories for any skier, man or woman.
The 27-year-old has always been open with her fans on social media and gave an insight into her feelings on Tuesday night.
“What if you could actually go back in time, and tell yourself what will happen in your own future?” tweeted Shiffrin.
“Would you choose to know? Or would you choose to be surprised… to find out along the way?
"Yesterday is history. Tomorrow is a mystery. But today is a gift. That’s why it’s called the present. I’m not sure who said that first, I know it from Kung Fu Panda [laughs].
“I think I like the mystery. Even though it feels like I might pass out from the uncertainty sometimes. History… history is just a step along the way, for all of us...”
Shiffrin has the opportunity to make it back-to-back wins in consecutive days on Wednesday with a second giant slalom taking place in Kronplatz.
There are two more races at the weekend, both slaloms which is Shiffrin's favourite discipline, before a break in the World Cup schedule so the athletes can prepare for the World Championships, which take place from February 6-18 in Courchevel and Meribel.
It means Stenmark's record could be broken at the end of February or in March when the World Cup resumes.

'Stressful, peaceful, nervous, excited!' - Shiffrin on range of emotions after record win

Three years ago, just days after World Cup win number 66, Shiffrin’s father, Jeff Shiffrin, unexpectedly died in an accident on February 2, 2020.
Her father coached her and Shiffrin often references him when speaking to the media or discussing her emotions, which she did in her emotional post.
“That thought gives me hope, for the first time since Feb 2, 2020, that I might have amazing things to look forward to in the future,” she continued.
“That the best times in my life might not be behind me. Today was truly a gift. I’m so thankful for it…
“…I’m thankful for the chance to celebrate for a moment with people I love, people I work with everyday who make it possible, team-mates and friends, competitors and some of my favourite people in the world near and far.
“I’m thankful for the mystery and I’m thankful for…the history. And now, I’m moving right along.”
