Switzerland's Patrick Kueng won his first world title on Saturday, holding off home favourite Travis Ganong in the men's downhill at Beaver Creek, Colorado.
Kueng's time of 1:43.18 was 0.24 seconds ahead of Ganong, while Beat Feuz, also of Switzerland, picked up the bronze a further 0.07 seconds back.
It was however a disappointing day for the big names and the Austrian team in particular, who did not have a finisher in the top ten despite their rich history of producing downhill winners at the World Championships.
Meanwhile Aksel Lund Svindal, world champion in 2013, was back in sixth place as he continues his return from injury, while fellow Norwegian Kjetil Jansrud, who leads the World Cup standings in downhill, was outside of the top ten in 15th.
Bode Miller didn't race after having had surgery to fix a severed right hamstring tendon following a bad crash in the super-G.
