Ted Ligety won his third Alpine ski World Cup giant slalom in succession in the discipline's showcase race in Alta Badia.
The American fended off a tough challenge by Frenchmen Cyprien Richard and Thomas Fanara to remain unbeaten this season in his favourite event with a combined time of two minutes 31.99 seconds.
"Cyprien was the best skier today. He made a mistake near the finish but he deserved to win," Ligety, the World Cup holder, said.
Richard, who was fastest in the first leg, finished 0.14 seconds short of his first World Cup victory. The runner-up spot was some consolation for the 31-year-old Frenchman, who was leading the giant slalom opener in Soelden, Austria, in October when it was cancelled because of bad weather.
Fanara, 29, earned his first World Cup podium after seasons marred by injury, 0.55 behind Ligety.
"It's my best season on the World Cup," said Ligety, who also took the lead in the overall World Cup standings. "I couldn't be more happy. My secret? My physical condition is much better this year and my skis are also super."
