Is Sunday the day that Mikaela Shiffrin equals Lindsey Vonn’s record of 82 World Cup wins? Shiffrin was denied by the weather in the week in the second slalom at Zagreb, and then by a piece of history from Valerie Grenier on Saturday in the first of a giant slalom double-header in Kranjska Gora. However on Sunday a fantastic first run has put her in great position to secure her 82nd World Cup win.

Shiffrin puts down blistering run to lead the way after first 1 in Kranjska Gora

American superstar Mikaela Shiffrin leads the way after the first run of the women’s giant slalom in Kranjska Gora with Lindsey Vonn’s record in sight.
Shiffrin is still on 81 World Cup wins, needing just one more to equal the record held by her compatriot Vonn of 82 wins, the most by any female skier.
She reached 81 in the week in the slalom at Zagreb but was denied a chance to match Vonn’s record when the second slalom was cancelled due to poor weather conditions.
In the first of two giant slaloms in Slovenia over the weekend on Saturday, Shiffrin struggled, having a poor second run that left her sixth overall as Canada’s Valerie Grenier created history with her first World Cup win.
But Shiffrin put down a blistering first run on Sunday morning as she looked back to her very best with the Vonn record firmly in her sights.
Shiffrin went out of the gates first and put pressure on her rivals with a fine time of 55.30.
There were only two other skiers who could get within half a second of her. Federica Brignone, who was 0.24s behind, and Saturday’s winner Grenier, who was 0.39s.
Only six skiers in total could get under a second off Shiffrin, as many struggled to get to grips with the conditions in the way Shiffrin did.
Now all eyes will turn to Shiffrin in the second run to see if she can match the record by Vonn.
You can watch the second run live on Eurosport and discovery+ from 11:15 UK Time.
