Mikaela Shiffrin clinched her first downhill victory in nearly two years with a victory in St Moritz. The 28-year-old took her career World Cup tally to 91 wins after edging Sofia Goggia by 0.15s to continue her incredible form. "I felt really good on the downhill skis in the training runs and today. My expectation was the veteran downhill skiers would have an extra gear on race day," she said.

'Shiffrin is on fire!' - American storms to victory with brilliant downhill run at St. Moritz

Mikaela Shiffrin underlined her impeccable form by edging out Sofia Goggia to win a downhill World Cup event for the first time in almost two years.
The American superstar took her overall World Cup career tally to 91, increasing the prospect of her becoming the first athlete in alpine skiing history to reach a century of World Cup wins this season.
Better known for her dominance in slalom, giant slalom and Super-G, only seven of Shiffrin's 144 career podiums have come in the downhill discipline, while her last win was in March 2022.
Shiffrin has made a strong start to the new season, winning slalom events in Levi and Killington last month, and beat Goggia, the 2018 downhill Olympic champion and three-time defending World Cup winner, by 0.15s in St Moritz.
"I felt really good on the downhill skis in the training runs and today as well," she said.
"My expectation was the veteran downhill skiers would have an extra gear on race day, I'm still experimenting with that.
"But I felt confident, the jet lag was not bothering me, and it was the best I could do. When it's good enough for victory, especially in downhill, that's cool."
Shiffrin clocked 1:28.84 for her first win on the Swiss slope, while Goggia's Italian teammate Federica Brignone completed the podium in third.
