Stephanie Venier breaks new ground winning first super-G victory of career in Crans Montana

The Austrian speedster defied challenging conditions to claim the win. The downhill specialist had never previously reached the top spot of the podium in the discipline, but after struggling on Friday and Saturday, pulled it out of the bag in the final race of the weekend. Stephanie Venier was able to get the better of Italian duo Federica Brignone and Marta Bassino.

Stephanie Venier claimed the first super-G World Cup win of her career in surprising circumstances as she bounced back from a tough weekend in Crans Montana.
The downhill specialist had never previously reached the top spot of the podium in the discipline, but after struggling on Friday and Saturday, pulled it out of the bag in the final race of the weekend.
The Austrian finished 10th and 17th in the two downhill races at the Swiss resort, but was able to get the better of Italian duo Federica Brignone and Marta Bassino, the former just four hundredths behind the winner.
"I did some mistakes, but all in all I'm very happy now," said Venier, 30, whose two previous World Cup victories had come in downhill, including one last month in Cortina d'Ampezzo.
"The last days (10th and 17th in the two Crans Montana downhills) wasn't that easy for me with all the pressure, and I had nothing to lose today.
"My ground speed is good and I handled it great I think."
The race for the small globe in super-G remains wide open, with leader Lara Gut-Behrami only sixth on home snow.
She leads Austria's Cornelia Huetter by five points, with Brignone also within striking distance, 34 points off the leader with four races to go.
