World Championships glory still eludes Sofia Goggia, with the Italian missing out on a shot at gold in the downhill at Meribel on Saturday after a straddle resulted in a disqualification. Goggia has descirbed her feelings as "am sorrowful because no-one will ever give me the chance to achieve a medal in this World Championship and this hurts inside and it is painful."
Sofia Goggia has said her disqualification for a straddle in the downhill at the Alpine World Ski Championships left her feeling sorrowful, and that she has pain inside.
The Italian went into the race as the favourite for glory in Meribel, and looked well set to challenge the time of winner Jasmine Flurry, but she straddled a gate and was DQd as a result.
With a shot at glory snatched away from her, Goggia cut a disappointed figure.
“I am more than disappointed,” Goggia told Eurosport. “I am sorrowful because no-one will ever give me the chance to achieve a medal in this World Championship and this hurts inside and it is painful.
“At the same time I know that sport is this way. Sometimes you are ranking fourth and everyone expects you to win easily, but it does not come.”
Goggia says the setback will not define her, and that her focus will be on coming back stronger.
“I have nothing to regret,” Goggia, an Olympic Games downhill champion in 2018, said. “I did everything I could.
“It was not an easy January. I had a good week here in Meribel, and life goes on.
“We are moving into the next races and this does not change my beautiful career and the skier that I am. I will try the next time.
“I was happy with what I did in the last days working for this downhill. It did not come, but life goes on.”
Goggia suggested something was awry with her equipment and caused the error.
“I did not take any risk today,” Goggia, 30, said. “It was a strange behaviour from my skis. It took me inside and I did not expect it.”
