Armand Duplantis breaks own world record to win third Diamond League title in Oregon, Gudaf Tsegay shatters 500m record

World records were crushed across the board at the Diamond League finals on Sunday, as Armand Duplantis and Gudaf Tsegay shone on the final day of the 2023 calendar. Duplantis beat his own world record in the pole vault, while Tsegay shattered the best 5000m time by nearly five seconds. Andre De Grasse won his maiden trophy, and there was success for Great Britain’s Keely Hodgkinson.

Sweden's Armand Duplantis beat his own mark at the Diamond League finals in Eugene, Oregon on Sunday to set a new pole vault world record with a height of 6.23m.
The 23-year-old’s first attempt at the height confirmed his third successive title, adding a centimetre to the 6.22m record he set indoors seven months ago, and two centimetres more than his previous mark at an outdoor event.
It is the seventh time in four years that Duplantis has broken the world record.
"The limit is very high," said Duplantis.
"I hope that I can continue to jump well and keep jumping higher than I did today, but for now I’m just enjoying the moment."
Gudaf Tsegay shattered the women’s 5000m world record as she missed out on a sub-14-minute finish by 0.21 seconds.
The Ethiopian’s official time across the line was 14:00.21, knocking almost five seconds off the previous record which stood at 14:05.20, set by Kenyan star Faith Kipyegon in June.
"I was really angry to not bring back two medals from the World Championships, but I knew from our training I had a lot of potential to do something with my fitness," said Tsegay.
"Even though the conditions weren’t perfect (in Eugene), we thought we could do it.”
Athing Mu clocked 1:54.97 to win in the 800m event, but as a national wildcard she was not eligible for a title. Great Britain’s Keely Hodgkinson, who finished second with 1:55.19, became champion.
Hodgkinson's time broke her own British record by 0.58secs.
Andre De Grasse posted a season-best in the day’s penultimate race to win the men’s 200m and earn his first title. The Canadian crossed the line in 19.76 ahead of American duo Kenneth Bednarek and Erriyon Knighton.
And in the final event of the day, Jamaica’s Shericka Jackson lined up to take a shot at Florence Griffith-Joyner’s 35-year 200m record which stands at 21.34, but came up short by 0.23 seconds.
Jackson still crossed the line first to win her third Diamond League gold medal, and the second of this year’s event after coming out on top in the 100m.
GB’s Daryll Neita was hopeful of a podium finish, but she finished fifth behind second place Marie-Josee Ta Lou, bronze medalist Anthonique Strachan and Twanisha Terry.
Norway's Jakob Ingebrigtsen won his second title of the weekend as he held on to win the men's 3,000m ahead of Ethiopia's Yomif Kejelcha.
