2023 is shaping up to be a big year for British athletics, with the World Championships taking place in Hungary later in the summer. Morgan Lake will hope to be front and centre of the charge, and she kicked off the year in superb style by breaking the British high jump record at a meet in Hustopece in Czech Republic. The 25-year-old took the record off Katarina Johnson-Thompson.

Black History Month: Katarina Johnson-Thompson, The Rise

Morgan Lake wrote herself into the history books by breaking Katarina Johnson-Thompson’s British high jump mark.
At a meet in Hustopece in Czech Republic, Lake cleared a height of 1.99m to take the British record.
Superstar heptathlete Johnson-Thompson set the previous mark of 1.98m at the Rio Olympics in 2016.
The mark also saw Lake eclipse her personal best by 2cm, which she set at the same Hustopece meet in 2019.
Lake has been a prodigious talent for some time. She won the world junior heptathlon and high jump crowns in 2014 - before focusing on the latter event.
The 25-year-old took silver in the high jump at the 2018 Commonwealth Games when moving into the adult ranks.
Despite becoming British champion for the fifth and sixth times in 2020 and 2021, Lake’s form was below her best and those struggles continued in 2022.
But the early signs from 2023 are positive, and she will have her sights on the UK Athletics Indoor Championships later in the month before focusing on the World Championships in Budapest in August.
