World Athletics Championships: Noah Lyles lands sprint double as Zharnel Hughes and Dina Asher-Smith miss out on medals

Noah Lyles won 200m gold to become the first man to complete the sprint double at the World Athletics Championships since 2015. The American was the favourite and lived up to his billing. It was double disappointment for the British hopefuls, as Zharnel Hughes finished fourth in the men's 200m, and Dina Asher-Smith struggled to seventh in the women's 200m final.

America’s Noah Lyles sealed a dominant gold in the men’s 200m final as Great Britain’s Zharnel Hughes and Dina Asher-Smith missed out on medals on day seven of the World Athletics Championships in Budapest.

Lyles powered to the line in a time of 19.52 seconds for a third successive 200m crown and became the first man to complete the world sprint double since Usain Bolt in 2015.

The 26-year-old now has the chance to make it a hat-trick of gold medals with America the favourites to win the 4x100m relay.

Erriyon Knighton, also of the United States, pushed Lyles for the first 100m but had to settle for silver, ahead of Letsile Tebogo, who took bronze.

Hughes, who claimed bronze in the 100m final, couldn't repeat his heroics and came home in fourth.

Speaking afterwards to Eurosport, Hughes said: "[I'm] not too mad. It was right within my grasp, but nevertheless we'll come again next year. That's the plan.

"I'm happy to be putting Great Britain back on the top. We haven't been here for some years, but I'm here and I'm definitely going to take on the battle and bring my 'A' game always."

In the women’s 200m final, Asher-Smith suffered yet more disappointment as she laboured to seventh.

The 27-year-old was looking to make up for finishing eighth in the 100m final but couldn’t find the kind of form that saw her win gold in this event in 2019.

Jamaica’s Shericka Jackson was in a league of her own as she got within 0.07 seconds of the world record in a dominant victory, crossing the line almost half a second clear of USA’s Gabby Thomas.

The bronze medal went to Sha’Carri Richardson on a great night for American sprinting, while Great Britain’s Daryll Neita ran a personal best of 22.16 seconds to finish fifth.

In the women’s triple jump, Yulimar Rojas of Venezuela left it until her sixth and final jump to land a dramatic fourth consecutive world title.

The Olympic champion and world record holder was eighth on 14.33m with just one attempt left but made it count as she leapt 15.08m to deny Ukraine’s Maryna Bekh-Romanchuk on 15.00m.

Cuba’s Leyanis Perez Hernandez completed the podium on 14.96m.

Elsewhere, Britain’s Keely Hodgkinson and Jemma Reekie both won their 800m semi-finals and will go for gold on Sunday.

Hodgkinson’s progress was smooth, as she led virtually from start to finish to cross the line in a time of 1:58.48.

The same could not be said for Reekie, however. The 25-year-old found herself boxed in with 300m to go and had to back off to find some space before a late burst saw her recover to finish first.
