Hampered by numerous injuries, including the loss of closer B.J. Ryan for the season following elbow surgery, the Blue Jays will also be without ace pitcher Roy Halladay for four-to-six weeks after he underwent an appendectomy before the game.
Toronto third baseman Troy Glaus also left Friday's game after suffering an apparent leg injury running out a fly ball in the first inning. He missed 14 games earlier this year due to a sore left heel.
Despite the injury concerns, Burnett (3-3) gave the Blue Jays a badly needed lift with a strong 6 2/3 innings, allowing one run on five hits with five walks in addition to his 10 strikeouts.
"It took a load off," Toronto manager John Gibbons said. "It felt like we won the World Series."
Elijah Dukes hit a solo home run off Burnett in the first inning and that was all the scoring the Devil Rays could muster off the starter and relievers Casey Janssen and Jeremy Accardo, who finished off the seven-hitter.
Jason Phillips had a two-run double in the fourth inning off Tampa Bay starter Scott Kazmir (2-2) to put the Blue Jays 2-1 ahead, before Toronto added another run in the sixth and two more in the seventh to complete the scoring.
"It felt good," Phillips said. "We got to play some music in the clubhouse. It's not a morgue in here."
Alex Rios homered and had two of Toronto's 12 hits, while Aaron Hill also had two hits and scored a pair of runs.
Kazmir was charged with five runs, four earned, on nine hits with six strikeouts and three walks over 6 1/3 innings to take the loss.
Kenji Johjima hit a two-run home run to lead the Seattle Mariners to a 3-0 victory over the New York Yankees.
Nick Markakis and Melvin Mora both had four hits as the Baltimore Orioles won their fourth straight game by downing the Boston Red Sox 6-3. Boston saw its four-game winning streak snapped with the loss.
Sammy Sosa belted his 596th career home run but it was not enough to prevent defeat as the Los Angeles Angels beat the Texas Rangers 6-3.
Jon Garland pitched 8 1/3 strong innings, lifting the Chicago White Sox to a 2-1 win over the Kansas City Royals. Chicago has won five of its last six games.
NATIONAL LEAGUE
The New York Mets snapped the Milwaukee Brewers' six-game winning streak on Friday with a 5-4 win at at Shea Stadium.
Carlos Delgado, David Wright and Damion Easley all homered to give the Mets their seventh win in nine games. The Brewers, who have the best record in major league baseball, suffered just their 11th loss in 35 games this season.
The surprising Brewers still hold a seven-game lead in the NL Central despite the loss, but they play 13 of their next 16 games on the road.
New York scored four runs in the fourth inning to take an early lead, with Delgado hitting a two-run homer and Wright a solo shot to go along with a run-scoring single by Paul Lo Duca.
"They've got some guys over there that if you make a mistake, they're going to bash it. And the couple of mistakes that we made, they made us pay for," Milwaukee manager Ned Yost told reporters.
Easley later added a solo homer in the seventh to account for the Mets' other run, a score they would need to offset three Milwaukee homers that brought the Brewers back into the game.
"They fought back like we do," Mets manager Willie Randolph said.
Milwaukee's Geoff Jenkins and Prince Fielder hit solo home runs in the fifth and sixth innings and a two-run shot in the eighth by J.J. Hardy made it close.
Jorge Sosa (2-0) won his second start since being recalled from the minors, allowing two runs on four hits over 6 2/3 innings, striking out four and walking three. Three relievers finished the six-hitter, including Billy Wagner, who pitched a scoreless ninth inning for his ninth save.
"I think we showed them a lot of what we got," Wagner said.
Brandon Webb pitched his sixth career complete game and Houston native Chris Young hit two solo home runs as the Arizona Diamondbacks beat the Astros 3-1 at Houston.
Atlanta manager Bobby Cox tied Sparky Anderson for fourth place on the all-time wins list with his 2,194th win as the Braves beat the Pittsburgh Pirates 4-1.
Pat Burrell homered twice and drove in five runs as the Philadelphia Phillies beat the Chicago Cubs 7-2.
