Igawa, 27, acquired this winter by the Yankees, compiled a 2-1 record with a bloated 7.63 earned run average. He gave up 27 runs in 30.2 innings, yielding eight homers and 14 walks.
New York signed Igawa to a five-year, $20 million contract after paying a posting fee of $26 million to the Hanshin Tigers for the right to negotiate with him.
In place of the Japanese hurler, the Yankees called up right-hander Matt DeSalvo to start Monday night's game against the Seattle Mariners.
DeSalvo, 26, was 3-0 with a 1.05 ERA at Triple-A Scranton-Wilkes Barre this season.
Yankees' reliever Scott Proctor was suspended by the commissioner's office for four games for throwing a pitch at Mariners shortstop Yuniesky Betancourt in Sunday's game against Seattle. He is appealing the suspension.
Manager Joe Torre was also suspended for a game over the incident and will not be on the bench for Monday night's game.
