The 25-year-old restricted free agent had been offered a five-year deal from the Hawks worth $33 million (£16.54 million) but turned it down. The move is unprecedented for a player of his calibre.
"This is a unique situation with Greece, and to my knowledge it is believed to be the highest contract ever awarded in EuroLeague history," Hawks General Manager Rick Sund said on the team's website.
"We feel we presented a fair and competitive offer to keep him in Atlanta."
Childress was one of Atlanta's key bench players last season, and helped the Hawks make the post-season for the first time since 1999.
In four years in Atlanta, Childress averaged 11.1 points and 5.6 rebounds per game.
