Irving, who was born in Melbourne when his father was playing in the city in the 1990s and holds dual Australian-US nationality, has indicated he would be interested in playing for the Boomers in London.
The 19-year-old point guard represented the US at U18 level last year, however, and Basketball Australia accept that they will have their work cut out to engineer a switch in eligibility.
"We need to work through the steps that are there and the processes that are there to try to see if it's possible change or challenge that," chief executive Larry Sengstock told Fox TV on Friday.
"There has been precedent, there have been a couple of players who have been given the ability to play for another country."
Irving is the second Australian-born player to be taken as top pick in the draft after Milwaukee Bucks center Andrew Bogut in 2005.
