There was plenty for a fervent Oberhof crowd to shout about as Simon Schempp led a German one-two to win the men’s biathlon World Cup event.
The 28-year-old trailed World Cup leader Martin Fourcade following the final shoot, but overtook the Frenchman with a final sprint on the home straight.
Schempp came home in 38:30.9 minutes, with Fourcade pushed down to third as German Erik Lesser edged out the five-time World Cup champion to the runners-up spot following a photo finish.
Schempp's triumph was the first by a German in Oberhof since 2012 and sees him sit third in the overall World Cup standings on 370 points, 23 ahead of Lesser.
Despite being pipped to the win Fourcade leads the standings on 610 points, with his nearest challenger Anton Shipulin on 379 after coming home 14th in Oberhof.
