Australian Billy Dib has become a featherweight world champion after beating Mexico's Jorge Lacierva for the IBF title on a points decision.
Dib was largely controlled through the fight for the vacant belt, and was rewarded with a unanimous decision from the three judges after 12 tough rounds at the Olympic Park Sports Centre in Australia.
Dib finished ahead on the cards 119-109, 118-109 and 115-112.
Watched by a crowd including former world champions Kostya Tszyu and and ex-NSW premier Bob Carr, 25-year old Dib relied on footwork and movement to evade Lacierva, who preferred to attack on the inside.
The Mexican was penalised a point in the fourth round for hitting after the break, his spoiling tactics ultimately proving ineffective.
Dib improves his record to 32-1, while 33-year-old Lacierva slips to 39-8, with six draws.
