The boxer made the announcement via a video posted on his website, confirming news that was long suspected.
The 32-year-old, a former world champion at both welterweight and light welterweight, had not fought since being outclassed by Filipino legend Manny Pacquiao in a bout in Las Vegas two years ago.
Despite the disappointment of falling short against Pacquiao, Hatton had spoken several times about a possible return to the ring, saying last year that he wanted to bring down the curtain on his career with a victory.
But despite rumoured big-money offers from fighters including Juan Manuel Marquez and Erik Morales, Hatton stayed out of the sport.
He did not stay out of the limelight, however, hitting the headlines last September after being admitted to The Priory suffering from drink and depression problems. He was also accused of snorting cocaine after tabloid newspapers published pictures of him appearing to snort a white powder.
But fans will always remember Hatton for the gutsy performances against the likes of Kostya Tszyu, Luis Collazo and Juan Urango - as well as for his colourful personlity and cheeky smile.
Hatton leaves the sport with a record of 45 wins and two defeats, with 32 of his wins coming via knockout.
The Manchester City fan will continue to work in the sport as a promoter.
