By David Boyle: On the 18th September Frank Warren promotes a massive fight bill of home grown talent at the LG in Birmingham.
On the card is Britain’s next superstar in the making, Frankie Gavin. His opponent on the night is relatively unknown Irishman Michael Kelly. Both will be fighting for the Irish junior welterweight championship.
For this reporter it is a very interesting fight, especially when you look at their amateur backgrounds. Both boxers have tasted world honours as amateurs. Gavin winning the world championship and Kelly twice winning the Military Olympics.
SecondsOut caught up with Michael Kelly as he prepares for the biggest fight in his professional career so far.
Having had a slow burning career to date Kelly feels that this fight can finally turn the lights on and progress himself up the rankings.
“For all of my fights to date, I have had barely four weeks notice for a fight and its hard getting up and motivated for a fight, especially when you don’t even know who you are facing, with the Frankie fight this is what I have been looking for”, Kelly explained.
“Frankie is a hell of a fighter no question, but in me he is entering the unknown and I have read he plans to beat me inside three rounds, and I wish him all the best in trying”, declared Michael.
Having boxed mostly guys who don’t want to fight and run all night Kelly is very focused and can’t wait to fight someone who is going to engage him and not run.
Michael explained to that he is in the right place for this fight training at John Breen’s gym in Belfast.
“The gym is just buzzing at the moment with the return of Eamonn Magee to the fold, John works every fighter hard and Eamonn is great to train with and motivates everyone,” said Kelly.
With the likes of unbeaten fighters like European Champion Paul McCloskey, Jamie Conlon and Andy Murray as sparring partners Kelly’s camp is a no nonsense one.
“I have been sparring Jamie and Michael McLaughlin and soon Paul McCloskey will be sparring which will be great, the need for sparring south paws is so important,.” Insisted Kelly.
Explaining the difference between himself and all of the other opponent that Gavin has faced, he Kelly said.
“All of his opponents went into the fight just looking for a payday and not really believing that they can win, I believe I can win, ” said Kelly.
“I have the best camp you can ask for and with the amateur background, I am a polished fighter, I know how to fight and I know how to win”.
