Disgraced former WBO welterweight champion Antonio Margarito has been granted a boxing licence in Texas, paving the way for a huge November 13 showdown with pound for pound king Manny Pacquiao.
Despite Margarito being refused a licence to fight in California and Nevada after being found guilty of glove tamperring before his fight with Shane Mosley back in January 2009, it appears the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation are not too particular who the allow to ply their trade in the State of Texas.
It looks like the November 13 fight will take place at the Dallas Cowboys stadium, where Pacquiao defeated Joshua Clottey clearly on points in March this year.
Speaking of Margarito’s licence approval, Pacquiao’s promoter Top Rank’s Todd DuBoef said: "We have been sitting on pins and needles waiting for approval. We are relieved Texas did its due diligence and approved the licensing."
In a press release: William Kuntz, executive director of the Austin-based state’s licensing and regulation department,said”.After a thorough review of his application it was determined Mr. Margarito met the requirements of the Texas Combative Sports Act and Rules."
Margarito’s boxing licence was revoked a few weeks after his stoppage defeat to Shane Mosley. Shortly before the fight Mosley’s training team requested Margarito’s hand wraps be inspected and were found to contain an illegal plaster-coated substance.
