Forget about chasing a third fight with Manny Pacquiao. Juan Manuel Marquez has bigger plans in mind. After his 9th round knockout win over Juan Diaz on Saturday night at the Toyota Center in Houston, Texas, the 35 year-old dropped a bombshell, calling out retired pound for pound boxing king Floyd Mayweather Jr.
“Instead of going down or staying at this weight,” Marquez told HBO’s Max Kellerman, after defeating Diaz, “I am going to go up and meet (Floyd) Mayweather (Jr) to see who is the best, pound for pound.”
Many observers had expected 35 year-old Marquez 50-4-1 (37), who now holds The Ring magazine, WBA/WBO/IBO lightweight world titles, to again call out current pound for pound No.1 Manny Pacquiao in attempt to continue their brutal rivalry.
Marquez and Pacquiao fought to a thrilling draw in May 2004 and then contested a rematch in March 2008, where Pacquiao won a disputed twelve round split points decision.
If Pacquiao doesn’t want to fight him for a third time, Marquez will go after 32 year-old Mayweather 39-0 (25), who retired undefeated after stopping Ricky Hatton in December 2007 and who is rumoured to be considering a comeback later in 2009.
“Pacquiao is the best now pound for pound, but he doesn’t really want to fight me,” explained Marquez, “so I want to fight the best pound for pound and that would be Mayweather.”
