Andrew Selby proved too strong for Egyptian rival Hesham Abdelaal as he emerged a confident winner from his opening flyweight bout at the World Amateur Boxing Championships in Baku.
Selby, the newly crowned European champion, progressed with a 28-16 win, picking up points at will with a string of combinations to head and body and will now face Georgia's Severiane Chiladze.
He joins British team-mate Khalid Yafai in the last 32 after he was awarded a first round bye, meaning he opens his campaign against Japan's Katsuaki Susa this weekend.
Meanwhile, bantamweight Luke Campbell silenced a home crowd packed with local soldiers, with a comprehensive 17-7 victory over Azerbaijan's Rahim Najafov.
Former European champion Campbell, who will next face Romania's Razvan Andreiana, raced into an early advantage and picked up a flurry of points in the final round as the Azeri boxer desperately and belatedly came forward.
Commonwealth Games gold medallist Sean McGoldrick will be looking to join him in the last 32 when he faces Turkey's Furkham Memis, who defeated him at this year's European Championships, on Wednesday.
Flyweight Michael Conlon got the Irish challenge off to a winning start with a 17-8 win over reigning European bronze medallist Alexander Riscan of Moldova.
