Close, but not enough

Germany's Birgit Fischer failed in her bid to win a a record-equalling ninth Olympic gold medal on Saturday when world champions Hungary won the K2 500 final. Instead, Hungary's Natasa Janics picked up her second gold medal in less than an hour.

Fischer had been bidding to join ex-Soviet gymnast Larissa Latynina and athletes Paavo Nurmi and Carl Lewis and swimmer Mark Spitz at the top of the record books for the most summer Olympic gold medals won.
Hungary, who lost to Germany by less than a metre in Friday's K4 500 final, passed the Germans in the second half to give Natasa Janics her second gold medal in little over an hour.
Germany took silver and Poland finished third.
Earlier, Janics stormed to the Olympic gold medal in the women's K1 500 to the delight of her boisterous Hungarian fans.
Janics, who finished fourth in Sydney four years ago, led from the start and had a length lead by the finish.
Italy's Olympic champion Josefa Idem took silver and Canada's Caroline Brunet finished third.
GERMAN CONSOLATION
Germany's Andreas Dittmer came from behind to win the men's C1 500 metres Olympic gold medal on Saturday to add to the silver medal he won on Friday. The 32-year old Dittmer, Olympic champion on the 1,000 metre course in Sydney and Atlanta, also won a bronze in the C1 500 in Sydney.
Russia's Maxim Opalev roared off from the start on Saturday and led for 400 metres but Dittmer timed his finish to perfection.
Spain's David Cal, who won gold over 1,000 metres on Friday, took silver and Opalev held on for bronze.
K1 DELIGHT FOR CANADA
In the men's K1 500, Canada's Adam van Koeverden stormed to gold, to add to the bronze medal he picked up on Friday.
Double world champion Nathan Baggaley fired off at the start but van Koeverden moved up through the field in the second half of the race to grab the verdict.
Australian Baggaley held on for silver and Britain's Ian Wynne took bronze.
Van Koeverden finished third in the K1 1,000 on Friday after leading at the 500-metres mark.
C2 GOLD FOR CHINA
China's Meng Guanliang and Yang Wenjun clinched the gold medal in the men's C2 500 in a thrilling final.
Four boats were level coming into the last 100 metres and China just pulled ahead in the last seconds.
Cuba grabbed the silver medal and Russia took third.
Germany's Christian Gille and Tomasz Wylenzek, who finished fifth, had been looking for their second gold after winning the C2 1,000 on Friday.
UNBEATABLE GERMANY
Germany led from start to finish to win the men's K2 500 Olympic gold.
Ronald Rauhe and Tim Wieskoetter, world champions for the last three years, won by a metre over Australia in silver.
The result gave Australia's Nathan Baggaley his second silver medal in little over an hour after he finished second in the K1 500.
The Germans had a strong start, taking a metre lead over the field, and held on until the finish. Belarus finished third.
