Welcome to TNT Sports' live text coverage on Day 3 of the fourth Test between India and England in Ranchi. Dhruv Jurel hit 90 to reduce the deficit as Shoaib Bashir finished with five wickets, before Ravichandran Ashwin and Kuldeep Yadav skittled England for 145 runs in their second innings. Rohit Sharma and Yashasvi Jaiswal safely brought India to 40 without loss at close of play.

STUMPS! India 40-0, requiring 152 more runs to win Test and Series

It has been a disastrous day for England. First Dhruv Jurel's 90 reduced England's lead to 46 and then Ravichandran Ashwin (5-51) and Kuldeep Yadav (4-22) skittled them for 145 in their second innings.
Lastly, India not only saw out the tricky eight over spell at the end of the day but put on 40 runs.
We will be back tomorrow morning at 4am for coverage of the fourth (and effectively final) day of play. Hope to see you then.

India 40-0 (Rohit 24, Jaiswal 16): Overs 8. Target 192

Root takes the last over of the day and Jaiswal has now thoughts about just playing it out until the last ball with good fielding denying him a boundary.

India 38-0 (Rohit 24, Jaiswal 14): Overs 7. Target 192

Bashir comes into the attack and at least stems the flow of runs.

India 37-0 (Rohit 24, Jaiswal 13): Overs 6. Target 192

England have to try something different. This opening bowling spell hasn't worked.

India 33-0 (Rohit 23, Jaiswal 11): Overs 5. Target 192

Whether knocking the ball around for singles or putting bad balls away, this is all too easy for India.

India 29-0 (Rohit 23, Jaiswal 8): Overs 4. Target 192

Hartley skids one on which strikes Rohit on the pad but it is going down the leg side. The next ball is a full toss which is punished for four. The last ball is more audaciously swiped over the infield for another.

India 20-0 (Rohit 11, Jaiswal 8): Overs 3. Target 192

Jaiswal is given the carrot of the sweep with an open boundary at square leg and the young opener takes full advantage.

India 13-0 (Rohit 11, Jaiswal 2): Overs 2. Target 192

Hartley shares the new ball. Two over-pitched deliveries are dispatched perfectly through midwicket by the Indian skipper.

India 4-0 (Rohit 3, Jaiswal 1): Overs: 1. Target: 192

Root takes the new ball hoping to replicate the skid Ashwin got with the fresh cherry. He needs to pitch them though, he is lucky to avoid a four from a full toss on leg stump to Rohit with the last ball.

England 145 all out. India require 192 runs to win.

India have to be favourites now, but their top order have a tricky 25 minutes or so to face now.

WICKET! Anderson c Jurel b Ashwin 0.

Ashwin secures his fifth wicket and it was a smart catch from Jurel. The ball struck Anderson's pad and then as the bat was following through it tapped the ball back towards the Indian wicketkeeper who took a smart catch.

WICKET! Foakes c and b Ashwin 17. England 145-9

Foakes doesn't pick the carrom ball and tries to hit Ashwin through the leg side but spoons a catch back for the veteran spinner's fourth wicket.

England 145-8 (Foakes 17, Bashir 1): Overs 53. Lead: 191

Is this bizarre pitch evening out again? Kuldeep is not looking quite as impossible to play - at least the way Foakes is going about it.

England 144-8 (Foakes 16, Bashir 1): Overs 52. Lead: 190

Foakes gets a single off the last ball to keep the strike.

WICKET - NO!

A great double bluff. They packed the leg side, Foakes went for the reverse sweep off Ashwin and seemed to be trapped in front of the wicket, but he got the slightest of touch from the bottom of his bat which the snickometer shows on the DRS.

England 143-8 (Foakes 15, Bashir 1): Overs 51. Lead: 189

Kuldeep has an appeal for caught down the leg side off Bashir form the last ball, but it clearly just hit the pad.

Ashwin is not having any joy now...

But earlier he had England reeling after taking the new ball. First came the wicket of Duckett...
...and then Pope with the next delivery:

England 142-8 (Foakes 14, Bashir 1): Overs 50. Lead: 188

Foakes is comfortable playing in this manner and Bashir showing very good discipline too. These runs could be crucial. They have got to the drinks break which did not look likely earlier.

A reminder of Bashir's golden moment earlier...

It seems a long time ago, but here is a moment he will never forget:

England 141-8 (Foakes 13, Bashir 1): Overs 49. Lead: 187

We all wanted Foakes to attack, but I'm starting to think he might have the right idea. Progress by stealth.

England 140-8 (Foakes 12, Bashir 1): Overs 48. Lead: 186

Ashwin comes back into the attack. Not what you'd call a desperate move. But it's the same pattern.

England 139-8 (Foakes 11, Bashir 1): Overs 47. Lead: 185

Another over. Same story. Bashir does well to keep out the penultimate ball which keeps low. Will India start getting frustrated?

England 138-8 (Foakes 10, Bashir 1): Overs 46. Lead: 184

One single at the time, England edge onwards. Will Rohit keep with these two bowlers?

England 137-8 (Foakes 9, Bashir 1): Overs 45. Lead: 183

Foakes content at present to just score singles from the fourth ball of the over onwards.

England 136-8 (Foakes 8, Bashir 1): Overs 44. Lead: 182

Bashir playing a lot more within himself in this innings. Will Foakes gamble on an attacking shot?

England 135-8 (Foakes 7, Bashir 1): Overs 43. Lead: 181

You wait for for overs for a run and then two come along at once.

England 133-8 (Foakes 6, Bashir 0): Overs 42. Lead: 179

It is difficult to see where any run comes from at present, let alone 21.

England 133-8 (Foakes 6, Bashir 0): Overs 41. Lead: 179

What England would give for another 21 runs now.

WICKET! Robinson lbw b Kuldeep 0. England 133-8

Robinson is beaten by the last ball of the over with the ball striking him in front of middle stump and flicking leg stump, with 'umpire's call' staying with the bowler.

WICKET - NO!

Robinson was given out leg before first ball but the video replay shows it hit Robinson's glove.

WICKET! Hartley c Sarafaraz b Kuldeep 7. England 133-7

He was waiting for a ball to launch at but does not connect with the ball well and it drops just short of mid on where the Indian fielder dives forward and takes a fine catch.

England 133-6 (Foakes 6, Hartley 7): Overs 40. Lead: 179

A maiden for Jadeja. Will Hartley try to hoick Kuldeep?

England 133-6 (Foakes 6, Hartley 7): Overs 39. Lead: 179

Three singles, but there was another freakish delivery with low bounce which goes under Hartley's bat which he was glad was not heading into the stumps.

England 130-6 (Foakes 4, Hartley 6): Overs 38. Lead: 176

That's what we want to see. Two balls after a pea-roller just misses Foakes' off stump, Hartley stretches forward bending his front knee and blasts the ball high over deep backward square leg.

England 123-6 (Foakes 3, Hartley 0): Overs 37. Lead: 169

Creeping up in singles at present. Foakes' tight defence stopped a ball from Kuldeep sneaking between inside edge and pad.

England 122-6 (Foakes 2, Hartley 0): Overs 36. Lead: 168

Progress likely to be slow with these two at the crease you would think. It remains to be seen whether defending is the best policy on this minefield.

England 121-6 (Foakes 1, Hartley 0): Overs 35. Lead: 167

Hartley is beaten outside the off stump by a big leg spinner and then denied a four from a reverse sweep due to Jadeja's dive at gully.

England 120-6 (Foakes 0, Hartley 0): Overs 34. Lead: 166

Hartley does very well to keep out the last ball of the over which almost skids along the ground.

WICKET! Bairstow c Patidar b Jadeja 30

First ball after Tea the ball hits a crack and bounces prodigiously leading Bairstow to push the ball straight to Patidar at cover.

TEA: England 120-5, lead India by 166.

Ashwin's three wickets with the new ball and then Kuldeep with unplayable wrist spin has India right back in this match. Crawley looked superb before Kuldeep dismissed him for 60.
Watch how Shoaib Bashir completed his maiden first-class five-for this morning:

England 120-5 (Bairstow 30, Foakes 0): Overs 33. Lead: 166

Foakes survives the last balls before Tea.

WICKET! Stokes b Kuldeep 4: England 120-5

Stokes is bemused by the drift and then misses the ball off the pitch. The ball catches his pad and then ricochets into his stumps.

England 120-4 (Bairstow 30, Stokes 4): Overs 32. Lead: 166

Bairstow shoulders arms to a ball from Jadeja and was inches from being bowled. You don't play for turn with Jadeja! I say that, the next one turns a mile.

England 120-4 (Bairstow 30, Stokes 4): Overs 31. Lead: 166

Replays show another Jadeja ball in his last over which struck pad before bat would have been given out on revieew.

England 117-4 (Bairstow 27, Stokes 4): Overs 30. Lead: 163

With 15 minutes until tea England will be desperate to get off the field without losing another wicket. Stokes survives a close leg before call. The umpire did not give it, which meant he survived an 'umpire's call' which had the ball flicking his leg stump.

England 112-4 (Bairstow 24, Stokes 2): Overs 29. Lead: 158

Stokes gets off the mark with a strong push through the off side. He is then beaten by another fine delivery with the sixth ball.

WICKET! Crawley b Kuldeep 60: England 110-4

Kuldeep rips a big leg spinner and beats Crawley's bat as he looks to guide the ball through the vacant off side.

England 110-3 (Crawley 60, Bairstow 24): Overs 28. Lead: 156

A great receovery from these two. We have seen before England collapse when Joe Root's wicket is taken.

England 108-3 (Crawley 59, Bairstow 23): Overs 27. Lead: 154

Three more for Crawley off Kuldeep's over.

England 106-3 (Crawley 56, Bairstow 23): Overs 26. Lead: 152

Jadeja gets the outside of Crawley's bat but it goes along the ground down to third man to bring England into thre figures. Quickly the lead also passes 150. Jadeja beats Bairstow from the last delivery though, but Jurel does not take it cleanly.

England 99-3 (Crawley 51, Bairstow 22): Overs 25. Lead: 145

Kuldeep comes into bat and immediately turns a delivery which just clips the inside of Crawley's bat.

England 97-3 (Crawley 50, Bairstow 21): Overs 24. Lead: 143

Crawley nudges through the off side to bring up his half century. Just a quick raise of the bat and then back to business.

England 95-3 (Crawley 49, Bairstow 20): Overs 23. Lead: 141

Crawley gets closer to a very valuable half century, then Bairstow steps away from an Ashwin delivery and guides through the off side for four.

England 88-3 (Crawley 46, Bairstow 16): Overs 22. Lead: 134

Still no sign of Deep yet. Presumably Rohit waiting until the ball is likely to reverse. Jadeja almost skids a ball past Bairstow.

England 88-3 (Crawley 46, Bairstow 16): Overs 21. Lead: 134

It will be positive intent all the way from these two. Here Crawley strains every sinew to get back for a two.

England 85-3 (Crawley 44, Bairstow 15): Overs 20. Lead: 131

Bairstow with a swipe to midwicket from a half-tracker from Siraj, then another drive timed perfectly which is stopped just inside the cover point boundary.

England 76-3 (Crawley 44, Bairstow 6): Overs 19. Lead: 122

Bairstow drives Ashwin straight down the ground for four. A good sign to suggest he may back up his encouraging first innings score.

England 71-3 (Crawley 44, Bairstow 1): Overs 18. Lead: 117

Bairstow gets off the mark with an inside edge down to fine leg. Siraj drifts to leg stump and Crawley clips for four to fine leg.

WICKET! Root lbw b Ashwin 11: England 65-3: Overs 17

There is an appeal for leg before on Root and it is sent upstairs. It looked one of desperation but DRS showed it just being in line and striking the leg stump.

England 64-2 (Crawley 38, Root 11): Overs 16. Lead: 110

Siraj comes into bowl and he bowls a tight line just conceding a single.

England 63-2 (Crawley 37, Root 11): Overs 15. Lead: 109

Just a single from Ashwin's over. It feels like he could bowl from this end for the rest of the day.

England 62-2 (Crawley 36, Root 11): Overs 14. Lead: 103

Jadeja finds the edge of Root's bat but with his soft hands it just rolls to short third man for a single. Crawley punishes an over-pitched delivery for four.

England 55-2 (Crawley 30, Root 10): Overs 13. Lead: 101

The lead is restored to three figures with a typical late back-foot prod behind square from Root. Crawley miss-times a cross-batted swipe from the last bal but it lands safely.

England 52-2 (Crawley 28, Root 9): Overs 12. Lead: 98

England bring the 50 up. These two looking pretty comfortable at present.

England 49-2 (Crawley 26, Root 8): Overs 11. Lead: 95

Ashwin for the first time loses his line a little and Root pushes behind square for a couple.

England 45-2 (Crawley 25, Root 5): Overs 10. Lead: 91

Another boundary from Crawley, there is no turn so he is prepared to play through the line and drove wide of mid on for another four.

England 38-2 (Crawley 20, Root 3): Overs 9. Lead: 84

Crawley steps forward and smacks Ashwin over mid off for a boundary. The last two balls of the over he plays more conventionally but just as effective driving fiercely between extra cover and mid off for fours.

England 26-2 (Crawley 8, Root 3): Overs 8. Lead: 72

Jadeja not looking as dangerous as Ashwin and you wonder if Deep will replace him in the next over.

England 24-2 (Crawley 7, Root 2): Overs 7. Lead: 70

Another fine over from Ashwin who has become the leading Test wicket-taker in India.

England 22-2 (Crawley 6, Root 1): Overs 6. Lead: 68

Root as so often in his career comes to the crease with under 20 on the board. He gets off the mark straight away.

WICKET! Pope lbw b Ashwin 0: England 19-2

Pope on a pair is beaten in the flight and struck on the back pad. He goes upstairs to appeal, but without conviction and the decision stands, with the ball shown to be clipping the leg stump with an 'umpire's call'.

WICKET! Duckett c Safaraz b Ashwin 15: England 19-1

Ashwin gets some extra bounce from the surface and Duckett hits a catch straight to short leg.

England 17-0 (Crawley 3, Duckett 14): Overs 4. Lead: 63

India feel they are in the game with Duckett. He miscues an attempted switch hit again. If he is at the crease in half an hour, England's lead will be up near three figures.

England 13-0 (Crawley 2, Duckett 11): Overs 3. Lead: 59

Ashwin has a shout for leg before against Duckett but it was going down the leg side. Duckett then smacks a reverse sweep for four.

England 7-0 (Crawley 1, Duckett 6): Overs 2. Lead: 53

Spin at both ends. Jadeja also gets the new ball. Duckett sweeps for four and then misses an attempted switch hit. Crawley beaten outside off stump with the last ball.

England 2-0 (Crawley 1, Duckett 1): Overs 1. Lead: 48

Ashwin begins with the new ball and immediately is on target beating Crawley outside his off stump.

LUNCH: England will begin second innings with 46-run lead

It is not as much as they would have hoped but still a margin which could prove crucial.
Dhruv Jurel batted superbly for his 90 before being the last batsman to fall to Tom Hartley (3-68).
Earlier, Jimmy Anderson took his 698th wicket to end Jurel's 76-run partnership with Kuldeep Yadav (28), but then the Indian wicketkeeper stepped up the pace adding 40 with Akash Deep before the quick fell to Shoaib Bashir (5-119) who grabbed his maiden first-class five-wicket haul.

WICKET! Jurel b Hartley 90: India 307 all out

A fantastic delivery from Hartley beating the outside edge and clipping the top of off stump.

India 307-9 (Jurel 90, Siraj 0): Overs 103

Siraj plays out the over from Bashir, with four runs coming from a bye down the leg side.

India 303-9 (Jurel 90, Siraj 0): Overs 102

Jurel clears deep midwicket playing off his back foot for his fourth six. He then hits over the field which came up for the last delivery.

WICKET! Deep lbw b Bashir 9: India 293-9

Deep slightly off balance misses the top spinner from Bashir who takes his first five-wicket haul in first-class cricket. Well deserved.

India 293-8 (Jurel 80, Deep 9): Overs 100.5

Deep spanks the first ball high over deep midwicket - pardon the pun. There is an appeal for a stumping off the third ball, but Deep got back in his ground.

India 287-8 (Jurel 80, Deep 3): Overs 100

Jurel is much prefering to take on Bashir at present, but this time the England spinner will have an over at Deep after Hartley's maiden.

India 287-8 (Jurel 80, Deep 3): Overs 99

The field is completely spread for Jurel now, but he still takes on the third ball hitting it high over the wide long on boundary, before taking a single.

India 280-8 (Jurel 73, Deep 3): Overs 98

Deep dives to ensure he makes the single off the fifth ball of Hartley. A little unnecessarily but shows his commitment nonetheless.

India 279-8 (Jurel 72, Deep 3): Overs 97

Jurel takes things up a gear coming down the wicket and clearing long on and then standing his ground and smashing Bashir over his head for a four. He also gets a single off the fourth delivery. Great batting.

India 268-8 (Jurel 61, Deep 3): Overs 96

A quick single from the last ball from Hartley keeps Jurel on strike.

India 267-8 (Jurel 60, Deep 3): Overs 95

Robinson drops Jurel at short midwicket. It was struck firmly but he got his hands to it, just flicking the ball to the outfield. The ball earlier Deep just cleared the same man in the field.

India 265-8 (Jurel 59, Deep 2): Overs 94

Rejecting singles before the fourth ball, the field then comes up and Jurel sweeps over the infield for four to midwicket. Anderson will now have a full over at Deep. In fact, it is Bashir who will bowl the next over.

India 261-8 (Jurel 55, Deep 2): Overs 93

A pattern is emerging with Jurel taking a single off the fourth ball and then Deep playing out the rest of the over.

India 260-8 (Jurel 54, Deep 2): Overs 92

It remains steady rather than quick progression for India, averaging just over two runs an over this morning.

India 259-8 (Jurel 53, Deep 2): Overs 91

Jurel is not noticeably speeding up the way he is playing. Not against Anderson anyway. We will see if he takes on Hartley.

India 256-8 (Jurel 50, Deep 2): Overs 90

Jurel brings up his fifty from the first ball and also reduces the deficit to 99. After a nervous moment defending Deep slogs to deep midwicket for a couple. Stokes puts more support for his spinner on the boundary.

India 253-8 (Jurel 49, Deep 0): Overs 89

New batsman Deep plays out the last three balls. England will suddenly feel a lot better about things, will Jurel attack more now?

WICKET! Kuldeep b Anderson 28: India 253-8

England's greatest pace bowler strikes when it did not feel a wicket was coming. Kuldeep is a little unlucky, the ball skids through and takes the inside edge of his bat, then onto his pads - and then the stumps.

India 252-7 (Jurel 48, Kuldeep 28): Overs 88

Hartley now takes over from Bashir and bowls a tidy line straight away.

India 251-7 (Jurel 47, Kuldeep 28): Overs 87

A slight moment of excitement as there is a sound down as the ball passes Jurel going down the leg side, but Foakes quickly points to his leg and England do not send upstairs.

India 250-7 (Jurel 46, Kuldeep 28): Overs 86

The 250-mark is breached by India and batting looks pretty comfortable for these two at present.

India 247-7 (Jurel 44, Kuldeep 27): Overs 85

The batsmen are in sync now and switching the strike with quick singles. The penultimate ball was an edge from Kuldeep to third man but not in the air. India moving closer to a two-figure deficit.

India 242-7 (Jurel 41, Kuldeep 25): Overs 84

Bashir forces the first uneasy moment for Kuldeep finding the inside edge of his bat but the ball runs away safely behind square.

India 241-7 (Jurel 40, Kuldeep 25): Overs 83

Anderson is right on target straight away. Not troubling the batsman yet. Though both have a little panic, with each wanting a single when the other did not.

India 240-7 (Jurel 39, Kuldeep 25): Overs 82

Bashir stays on and is hit confidently behind point for four by Kuldeep. Surely it is time for Anderson - and he is taking over from Robinson.

India 236-7 (Jurel 39, Kuldeep 21): Overs 81

Robinson gets first use of the new cherry. Stokes still persisting with an open field for Jurel allowing him a comfortable single, albeit this didn't matter for the first boundary of the morning which the Indian wicketkeeper played perfectly just past the stumps to the long on boundary.

India 230-7 (Jurel 34, Kuldeep 20): Overs 80

Another tidy over from Kuldeep and the new ball can now and will be taken. Calling Jimmy, England needs you again.

India 230-7 (Jurel 34, Kuldeep 20): Overs 79

The first of two no balls from Robinson brings up the fifty partnership from 137 balls. Not really acceptable to be overstepping so much when bowling in the 120s.

India 226-7 (Jurel 33, Kuldeep 19): Overs 78

Another maiden from Bashir. He is giving them nothing easy to score from.

India 226-7 (Jurel 33, Kuldeep 19): Overs 77

England perservering with an in-out field for Jurel for Robinson, gifting him a single to allow him to bowl at Kuldeep - a plan which doesn't look like working at present.

India 224-7 (Jurel 32, Kuldeep 18): Overs 76

Another good over from Bashir, just the single coming off it with Kuldeep particularly looking a little more uncertain playing him this morning.

India 223-7 (Jurel 31, Kuldeep 18): Overs 75

Ollie Robinson takes the ball at the other end and he gets the penultimate ball of the over to rear up off a length to surprise Jurel, hitting him in the ribs, before going for a leg bye.

India 219-7 (Jurel 30, Kuldeep 17): Overs 74

Bashir takes the ball and is bowling around the wicket running in diagonally in front of the umpire in the manner spinners used to do - but few do in modern cricket. He is right on target and takes a maiden with Kuldeep just playing defensively.

0355 - HELLO AND WELCOME!

Thanks for joining our coverage of the third day of the fourth Test which India begin still 134 runs behind England as they resume their first innings.

Bashir leaves Cook purring after four-wicket haul

TNT Sports expert Alastair Cook was full of praise for England bowler Shoaib Bashir, who took four wickets in an impressive showing in the fourth Test against India.
Bashir, who had only played four games of first-class cricket before the tour, dismissed Shubman Gill, Rajat Patidar, Ravindra Jadeja and - most crucially - Yashasvi Jaiswal to help keep India to 219-7 at the end of play.
“We’ve got to give a huge amount of credit to the selection panel,” Cook said on TNT Sports. “To pick a guy that had only played four first-class games before going on an England tour.
"They haven’t tried to fit square pegs in round holes, they’ve gone: 'What do we need? We think we need tall spinners. We’re copying the Indians’ success… Axar Patel bowling it into the wicket. Who are our tall spinners?'
“They picked Tom Hartley and Bashir, and if you’d have [asked] a lot of cricketers who the spinners were going to be, you wouldn’t have picked those two.
“Whoever made the big call on selecting both those two should take some credit, because it’s very easy to bash selectors when they get it wrong. But when they get it right, they deserve some credit.”
