See you in Dharamshala

Thanks for following our coverage of a frustrating but noble England defeat. We'll be back a week on the final Thursday for the final Test of a thrilling series. Even now, 3-2 has a nice ring to it.

More reaction from Ben Stokes

"That last partnership from India was very, very impressive given the state of the game. It’s disappointing to be on the wrong end of the result, but it was another great game and there are a lot of positives. Cricket’s a game of skill v skill, and batting was very, very tough against Ashwin, Jadeja and Kuldeep yesterday. Their skill was better than ours on that occasion.
"[On Tom Hartley and Shoaib Bashir] It’s not just how they bowled, it’s their character. It’s intimidating, or it should be, for two spinners at the start of their career to try to bowl India out in the fourth innings. Not once did they take a backward step; not once did you look at their backward language and think we were beaten. We’ve seen a lot of talent emerge on both sides which is really great.
"It’ll be interesting to see what the weather throws at us in Dharamshala. Believe it or not we’ve had some long-sleeved jumpers shipped over! We’ve got a nice break now to go away, recharge everything and then get going again."

The player of the match is Dhruv Jurel

Quite right too. His punishing first-innings 90 kept India in the game; his unbeaten 39 in the second innings won it.

The winning captain Rohit Sharma speaks

"It’s been a very hard-fought series, without a doubt, and to come out on the right side of it after four Test match feels really, really good. I’m really proud of everyone in the dressing-room. There were a lot of challenges thrown at us but I thought we responded pretty well to different challenges in each game. I thought we were quite composed in what we wanted to do on the field. Yeah, very happy.
"[On India’s young players] Their performances clearly show they want to be here [playing Test cricket]. It’s a big challenge to play Test cricket, we all know that, but when I watch these guys and talk to them, the response I get is quite encouraging. My job and Rahul Bhai’s job is to give them an environment they want to be in and not make them think too much [about the pressure]. They are very clear in want they want to do – Jurel especially, playing his second Test, showed composure and calmness. He’s got the shots as well. He played with a lot of maturity along with Gill.
"It’s never nice to be without key players. To fill their shoes is not easy and the young guys responded very well to all the situations that were thrown at them. When you make a mark like that, you put yourself in good stead with a long career ahead.
"We want to win in Dharamshala. This has been a great series and we want to put our best foot forward. For us, nothing changes."

Ben Stokes' reaction

"It was a great Test match. If you look at the scoreboard it says ‘India win by five wickets’ but I don’t think it tells the story of the game as a whole. It ebbed and flowed every single day. I’ve got to give some much credit to Tom Hartley and Shoaib Bashir.
"It's pretty intimidating for these young guys to start against India, who are incredibly hard to play against, so I want to give them the freedom to run up and treat every ball as an occasion rather than thinking about something that has already happened and can’t be changed. A lot of talent has emerged in this series, both for us and India. I love Test cricket and I think the future looks great.
"We’ve been good in periods with the bat. If we look at yesterday when we hard our turn with the bat - I don’t want to say it was impossible, because I don’t think anything’s impossible, but that was incredibly hard. When you get conditions like that against Ashwin, Jadeja and Kuldeep, scoring becomes very, very hard, especially when you want to eke the game out as long we wanted to.
"Joe Root played an incredible knock. I know he’s taken a bit of criticism which I don’t think is very fair. Class is permanent, form is temporary, all that kind of stuff. And Shoaib Bashir: wow. What a story, what a journey. Taking eight wickets, getting his first five-wicket haul as a professional in a Test match against India. The sky's the limit for that guy. I’m very, very proud of him.
"You come into series trying to win. But I’ve been captain for two years and my message has been consistent: it’s about the input everyone gives to the team. If we worry too much about the outcome we’re not committing as much as we can as individuals and a team. Nothing has been left on the field on this tour and that’s all we can ask for."

England's first series defeat under Ben Stokes

For the first time in the Bazball era, England have a lost Test series. These are their results to date:
  • England 3-0 New Zealand
  • England 2-2 India (first four matches played in 2021)
  • England 2-1 South Africa
  • Pakistan 0-3 England
  • New Zealand 1-1 England
  • England 1-0 Ireland
  • England 2-2 Australia

Jurel grabs the initiative

On TNT Sports’ live coverage, Steven Finn makes the point that the scoring rate in Gill and Jurel’s partnership was crucial. They came together with India having scored 36-5 in the previous 21 overs. Jurel was busy from ball one, and he and Gill scored twice as many runs from almost the same number of overs: 72 from 22.3. It was a textbook example of how to seize the initiative under pressure.

India lead 3-1 with one match play

This is starting to resemble the series between these two sides in the summer of 2018, when England’s 4-1 victory didn’t tell the story of a close and thrilling series. England have been competitive in all four games, even the one in which they eventually lost by 434 runs, but India have won the biggest moments. In time, I suspect we will marvel at England's ability to stay competitive for so long on what is the toughest tour of all. For now, though, it smarts.

India beat England by five wickets

The England players congratulate Gill and Jurel, who played nervelessly in an unbroken sixth-wicket partnership of 72. When they came together England were slight favourites and India were going nowhere, but Jurel changed the mood with his positive intent and Gill never really looked like getting out. It was a noble effort from England, especially their young spinners, but India deserved their win.

India 192-5 (Gill 52, Jurel 39) Overs: 60.5

Jurel slugs Hartley for four to take India within two of victory. He played a couple of soid defensive strokes, just to show he's still in control, and then works the winning runs into the leg side. India have won the match and the series with a game to spare!

India 186-5 (Gill 52, Jurel 33) Overs: 60. Target 192

Shubman Gill, who didn’t hit a single boundary in his first 119 deliveries, drives Bashir for two sixes in three balls to race to his fifty. It’s been a masteclass in self-restraint under extreme pressure. Or rather, it was: now, with victory in sight, it’s time to have some fun.

India 172-5 (Gill 39, Jurel 32) Overs: 59. Target 192

Gill drives Hartley for a single to bring up a superb, clear-headed fifty partnership with Jurel. Hartley then draws a leading edge from Jurel that lands safely on the off side. Three from the over; India need 20 more.

India 169-5 (Gill 37, Jurel 31) Overs: 58. Target 192

A good over from Bashir, with a couple of balls kicking menacingly at Jurel. He defends solidly and it’s a maiden. Virat Kohli would be proud to play with the calmness and certainty that Jurel has shown today.

India 169-5 (Gill 37, Jurel 31) Overs: 57. Target 192

A rare false stroke from Gill, who thick edges a good delivery from Hartley. He has bowled well today and will be so frustrated by that false start last night, which allowed India to reduce the target by around 20 per cent.

India 168-5 (Gill 37, Jurel 30) Overs: 56. Target 192

Jurel crashes Bashir down the ground, where the sprawling Duckett does brilliantly to save two runs. In the context of a low-scoring, slow-scoring game, his performance – in only his second Test – has been pretty special: 120 runs from 210 balls for once out.

India 165-5 (Gill 37, Jurel 27) Overs: 55. Target 192

Hartley has also changed ends. Gill defends with intimidating certainty and then works a single into the leg side. Jurel steals another on the off side to bring the target down to 27. England are almost at the point of no return.

India 163-5 (Gill 36, Jurel 26) Overs: 54. Target 192

Bashir has changed ends in fact. Gill hammers him down the ground but only for a single. That’s fine for India. They started the innings with a flurry of boundaries – 10 fours and a six in the first 16 overs – but have hit only one in the last 38. Gill and Jurel’s risk-management has been impeccable. The players take drinks, after which England will have one last push to keep the series alive.

India 161-5 (Gill 35, Jurel 25) Overs: 53. Target 192

Root replaces Bashir, who was starting to look a little tired. He’s had a marvellous match though: eight wickets, seven of them top-order batsmen. It feels like this is getting away from England now. Jurel edges Root short of Crawley at slip and through for a couple of runs, and there are five from the over in all. Dhruv Jurel really has grabbed this game by the scruff.

India 156-5 (Gill 34, Jurel 21) Overs: 52. Target 192

Big turn for Hartley outside off stump, but Gill doesn’t play at it. A short ball is cracked towards cover, where Stokes makes a decent stop. A maiden from Hartley; tellingly, it’s the first since Jurel came to the crease.

India 156-5 (Gill 34, Jurel 21) Overs: 51. Target 192

One from Bashir’s over.

India 155-5 (Gill 33, Jurel 21) Overs: 50. Target 192

Gill, who has been infected by Jurel’s positivity, flicks Hartley for two more. They are scoring a lot of runs on the leg side, though it’s not immediate clear what Ben Stokes can do to stop them; he only has another 37 runs to play with. Maybe it's time for Joe Root to have another bowl.

India 152-5 (Gill 30, Jurel 21) Overs: 49. Target 192

England look slightly flat in the field, and India are picking up ones and twos with increasing ease. Jurel has seized the initiative so impressively. When he came to the crease India had scored 36 runs in the previous 21 overs for the last of five wickets; since then they’ve added 32 in 10.4 overs. And, most pertinently, they haven’t lost a wicket.

India 148-5 (Gill 27, Jurel 20) Overs: 48. Target 192

While Jurel looks busy, Gill is batting with total serenity – no big shots, just watertight defence and low-risk singles. England need a wicket (again).

India 146-5 (Gill 26, Jurel 19) Overs: 47. Target 192

The first boundary in 31 overs! Bashir drifts outside off stump from round the wicket and Jurel lashes him through the covers for four. He dragged India back into the match in the first innings; now he is taking them towards the finish line.

India 140-5 (Gill 25, Jurel 14) Overs: 46. Target 192

Jurel has subtly changed the mood since arriving at the crease. He hasn’t hit a boundary – nobody has in the last 30 overs – but is looking for runs at every opportunity and has put a little bit of pressure back on England. If India win, I would make him player of the match. Four runs from Hartley’s over, which also includes a soft-handed edge short of slip from Jurel. India need 52 to win.

India 136-5 (Gill 24, Jurel 11) Overs: 45. Target 192

Bashir makes a good diving stop off his own bowling. Every run is worth fighting for in a situation like this. Gill and Jurel have looked relatively comfortable in the last few overs, at least when playing defensively. But if they keep scoring at this pace they might get one with their name on it. It's the eternal dilemma in a nervy run-chase: stick or twist?

India 134-5 (Gill 23, Jurel 10) Overs: 44. Target 192

So close! Jurel has a hack at Hartley, desperate to relieve the asphyxiating pressure, and edges the ball just over of Bashir at short third man. This is deliciously tense. It almost beggars belief that two England spinners, both uncapped a month ago, are trying to take England into a series decider in India.

India 133-5 (Gill 23, Jurel 9) Overs: 43. Target 192

A thick outside edge gives Gill a single off Bashir. Jurel turns another behind square. Every little helps, and at the moment India are getting them in ones and twos – the last boundary was in the 16th over.

India 131-5 (Gill 22, Jurel 8) Overs: 42. Target 192

Hartley beats Jurel with a horrible delivery that turns and barely bounces at all. Jurel continues to counter-attack, which is admirable but risky, and the over ends with a straight drive that bounces just short of Hartley.

India 130-5 (Gill 21, Jurel 8) Overs: 41. Target 192

Four singles from Bashir’s over.

India 126-5 (Gill 19, Jurel 6) Overs: 40. Target 192

Jurel is trying to put some pressure back on England, the first Indian batsman to do so since the openers were dismissed. He works Hartley for a pair of twos, then keeps the strike with a single off the penultimate ball. Gill survives an unconvincing shout for LBW; it was missing leg.

India 121-5 (Gill 19, Jurel 1) Overs: 39. Target 192

The hat-trick ball turns sharply into Jurel, who inside-edges onto the pad and down on the off side. Jurel then dances down the track to wave a single to long on. England know from the first innings how dangerous he can be. But at the moment they are all over India, who have lost five wickets for 37 in 21.5 overs.

WICKET! Sarfaraz c Pope b Bashir 0 (India 120-5)

He's gone! England are flying! Sarfaraz pushed defensively at Bashir and got a thin inside-edge onto the pad, with the ball looping into the hands of Ollie Pope. Shoaib Bashir is on a hat-trick!

REVIEW! Is Sarfaraz out first ball?

England think he's been given a bat-pad catch to Pope at short leg. If so, Shoaib Bashir will be on a hat-trick!

WICKET! Jadeja c Bairstow b Bashir 4 (India 120-4)

Shoaib Bashir strikes with a full toss! It was his first ball after lunch, and Jadeja flicked it straight to Bairstow at midwicket. That is a huge wicket because Jadeja is usually so reliable under pressure.

India 120-3 (Gill 19, Jadeja 4) Overs: 38. Target 192

Tom Hartley starts after lunch with a slip and short cover in place for Shubman Gill, who shovels a single into the leg side. Ravindra Jadeja gets another with a whip to long on. A quiet start to the session.

Afternoon session

The players are back on the field for what should be the final session of the match. India need 74 runs; England need seven explosions from the Ranchi surface. This is far from over: India went nowhere before lunch, scoring 35-3 off the last 20 overs of the morning session, and England will be happy if they bat with the same caution after the break.

LUNCH! India 118-3, requiring 74 more runs to win with seven wickets remaining.

An absorbing opening session leaves both sides feeling victory is very much possible.
The India openers put on another 44 runs to the overnight total before Yashasvi Jaiswal tried to hit Joe Root's first ball of the morning over the covers and was caught brilliantly by Jimmy Anderson diving forwards behind square.
From this point onwards it was England's morning with Tom Hartley taking the big wicket, eliciting a slight edge from Rohit Sharma as he came down the wicket, with Ben Foakes taking the catch and then stumping the skipper as well.
Rajat Patidar was not long in the middle, heading back without scoring when he nicked a ball from Shoaib Bashir in front of his pad which flew towards the leg side but Ollie Pope dived high to his right to grab a catch.

India 118-3 (Gill 18, Jadeja 3) Overs: 37. Target 192

Gill and Jadeja see out the final over of the morning session comfortably. They will be happy to get back in the pavillion.

India 117-3 (Gill 17, Jadeja 3) Overs: 36. Target 192

Root comes back into bowl. A couple of sharp singles from it. Stokes changing the field almost every ball to keep the batsmen's minds racing. Jadeja almost gets himself in a tangle from the last ball playing a defensive with back knee on the floor.

India 115-3 (Gill 16, Jadeja 2) Overs: 35. Target 192

He is the most honest bowler Bashir. He strikes Gill's pad and though Stokes is interested he shakes his head believing, correctly, it is going down the leg side. Another maiden.

India 115-3 (Gill 16, Jadeja 2) Overs: 34. Target 192

Gill just staying in his crease now and looking to play Hartley late. It just takes one ball to misbehave...

India 114-3 (Gill 15, Jadeja 2) Overs: 33. Target 192

As a bowler you'd much rather see Jadeja just looking to defend and Bashir almost hurries the penultimate ball past him. The Indian batsmen surely looking at getting to lunch with their wickets intact now.

India 114-3 (Gill 15, Jadeja 2) Overs: 32. Target 192

A nice looking drive gets Gill two more towards the India target.

India 112-3 (Gill 13, Jadeja 2) Overs: 31. Target 192

Gill scores three to narrow third man with a controlled edge, then.Jadeja just misses a big turner outside his off stump.

India 107-3 (Gill 9, Jadeja 1) Overs: 30. Target 192

Runs look hard to come by now. Hartley is also teasing the batsmen with each delivery and not giving them anything easy to release the pressure.

India 106-3 (Gill 8, Jadeja 1) Overs: 29. Target 192

Bashir is bowling beautifully. Jadeja is not looking confident facing him. One delivery strikes the pads but was missing off stump.

India 106-3 (Gill 8, Jadeja 1) Overs: 28. Target 192

Root saves four overthrows with a fine diving stop. England's fielders are realy on the ball today. A ball freakishly hits a crack moves too much and misses Jadeja's pad and the leg stump and goes for four byes. Who would be a keeper?

India 100-3 (Gill 7, Jadeja 0) Overs: 27. Target 192

What a Test match we have now.

WICKET! Patidar c Pope b Bashir 0. India 100-3

England now believe! Pope takes a great catch diving to his right at short leg after Bashir takes the inside edge of Patidar's bat in front of the pad. Another sublime catch secures a wicket.

India 99-2 (Gill 6, Patidar 0) Overs: 26. Target 192

Replays show it actually nicked Rohit's bat when it went past the outside edge. Either way Foakes gets a dismissal.

WICKET! Rohit st Foakes b Hartley 55

Wow, didn't see this coming. Rohit comes down the track and is beaten by Hartley with Foakes as sharp as ever behind the stumps. You have to say there is a chance now for England.

India 99-1 (Rohit 55, Gill 6) Overs: 25. Target 192

Bashir beats Gill with the first ball and they appeal for leg before but it is going down the leg side.
India 97-1 (Rohit 54, Gill 6) Overs: 24. Target 192
Rohit pushes through the offside for a single. India halfway there, England living on a prayer. Hartley beats Gill with a beautiful off spinner just missing his outside edge, before he scores a single off the last ball.

India 95-1 (Rohit 53, Gill 5) Overs: 23. Target 192

The Indian batsman comfortably see through the first over after the drinks break.

India 93-1 (Rohit 52, Gill 4) Overs: 22. Target 192

Gill faces the whole over from Hartley pretty confidently and takes a single off the last ball. The players are now taking drinks.

India 92-1 (Rohit 52, Gill 3) Overs: 21. Target 192

Rohit with another chip over the infield which suits England as they feel they can get Gill here, but he looks more solid by the end of the over, pushing down to mid off for a single.

India 90-1 (Rohit 51, Gill 2) Overs: 20. Target 192

Hartley is now back into the attack, with Root coming off after taking the wicket. Rohit pushes through the covers for two runs to bring up a very good fifty.

India 87-1 (Rohit 48, Gill 2) Overs: 19. Target 192

Bashir into bowl at the other end now. Gill looking to come out of his crease each ball. England will feel they can get his wicket here. Rohit flicks the last ball over the infield to keep the strike. Good play from the skipper.

India 85-1 (Rohit 47, Gill 1) Overs: 18. Target 192

Gill gets off the mark but England are buzzing in the field now.

WICKET! Jaiswal c Anderson b Root 37. India 84-1.

The change of bowling works, Jaiswal looks to hit inside-out over extra cover but the ball flies behind with Anderson taking the ball with a brilliant diving catch at 45.

India 83-0 (Rohit 46, Jaiswal 37) Overs: 17. Target 192

A good over from Hartley with just the one single coming from it. Now Root is coming into bowl.

India 82-0 (Rohit 45, Jaiswal 37) Overs: 16. Target 192

Jaiswal hits two fours off the last two deliveries, a sweep for four and then with Bashir dropping short he cuts for another boundary.

India 71-0 (Rohit 42, Jaiswal 29) Overs: 15. Target 192

Hartley comes into bowl and strikes Jaiswal on the pad as he came forward at him. England went upstairs but the snickometer suggested the India opener's bat brushed the ball first. Jaiswal then reverse sweeps the final ball for a boundary.

India 66-0 (Rohit 41, Jaiswal 25) Overs: 14. Target 192

Rohit sweeps firmly and accurately to the square leg boundary. These two looking in great nick.

India 61-0 (Rohit 36, Jaiswal 25) Overs: 13. Target 192

Some indecision on a quick single called by Jaiswal from Rohit, but he gets to the bowler's end safely. Jaiswal walks at Anderson before turning him on the leg side.

India 56-0 (Rohit 33, Jaiswal 23) Overs: 12. Target 192

Put in a third man? Bashir conceded four from a ball rearing and nicking Jaiswal's gloves, then outrunning Anderson to the boundary.

India 52-0 (Rohit 33, Jaiswal 19) Overs: 11. Target 192

Rohit brings up the India fifty with a remarkable shot high over the boundary at long on to a ball just slightly full angling into middle and leg stump.

India 45-0 (Rohit 27, Jaiswal 18) Overs: 10. Target 192

Bashir is sharing the bowling duties and put in a pretty good first over landing it in dangerous areas.

India 40-0 (Rohit 24, Jaiswal 16) Overs: 9. Target 192

Jimmy Anderson takes the new ball and is right on target making Rohit play, but not giving him anything to put away easily.
