Shoaib Bashir captured four wickets as England fought back against India on day two of the fourth Test in Ranchi to lead by 134 runs.
Joe Root ended unbeaten on 122 as England were bowled out for 353, before Bashir starred with the ball to restrict India to 219-7 at stumps on the second day.
After India captain Rohit Sharma was quickly dismissed by James Anderson, Bashir claimed the wickets of Shubman Gill, Rajat Patidar and Ravindra Jadeja.
The impressive 20-year-old then got the big wicket of Yashasvi Jaiswal for 73 as England took up a strong position going into day three.
Root ended the first day on 106 as his efforts led the charge on a tricky batting surface, as England ended Friday on 302-7.
The England batsman took his score to 122 to end the first innings unbeaten, as the tourists began to crumble when Jadeja captured the first wicket of the day to end Ollie Robinson’s impressive stint at the crease on 58.
Jadeja registered his third and fourth wickets to dismiss Bashir and Anderson in quick succession, as England lost their last three wickets for just six runs.
With the ball, England struck early to gain their first wicket when Anderson enticed Rohit into a slight nick on the outside edge to Ben Foakes behind the stumps.
After a disappointing start, India slowly rebuilt in the lead-up to lunch as Jaiswal and Gill chipped away. Jaiswal broke the all-time record for most Test sixes in a calendar year for India as the score advanced 86-1, before it was ended by Bashir as Gill fell to an lbw after a review.
Bashir added a second wicket with another lbw to dismiss Gill’s replacement, Patidar, as India lost their third wicket for 112.
India could only add 18 more runs before Bashir struck again to continue England’s fightback, as Jadeja was caught by Ollie Pope.
And then the big one fell for India, as Bashir added more gloss to his stunning display to bowl Jaiswal for 73. The 22-year-old saw the ball keep low, and it crashed into the stumps off the toe of his bat as the Indian sensation left the field with the hosts at 161-5.
Tom Hartley got in on the action to claim England’s sixth wicket to see off Sarfaraz Khan, caught superbly by Root at slip, and then ended Ravichandran Ashwin’s innings after a single run as the tourists took control of the fourth Test.
India ended Saturday’s play with Dhruv Jurel and Kuldeep Yadav regrouping with a partnership of 42, but with more work to do on day three.
