Antonio Tiberi was suspended back in February by his team Trek-Segafredo after he was fined £4,000 by the courts for shooting and killing a cat in San Marino. Tiberi issued a lengthy apology at the time with his team Trek-Segafredo saying it was a "reprehensible act" and suspended him for 20 days without pay. The team have now said that he has left them by mutual agreement.
Trek-Segafredo announced on Friday that Antonio Tiberi has left the team following a suspension for killing a cat in San Marino.
Tiberi – who was fined €4,000 (£3,500) by the courts in San Marino for killing the cat with an air rifle – issued a lengthy statement on his Instagram page back in February apologising, describing his actions as "tremendously stupid and irresponsible".
He said he had no intention of killing the animal.
The cat belonged to his neighbour, San Marino's tourism and posts minister Federico Pedini Amati.
Trek-Segafredo initially suspended him for 20 days, but have now released a statement saying that the team and Tiberi had parted ways.
“Trek-Segafredo and Antonio Tiberi have mutually agreed to part ways, effective immediately, after the rider’s actions during his suspension did not meet our criteria for a return to competition.
“No further comments will be given at this time.”
