Yves Lampaert (Quick-Step Floors) thrived in the rain to defend his Dwars door Vlaanderen title, roaring away from a five-strong breakaway group in the closing stages.
Just as the race was brewing towards a frenetic conclusion, Lampaert caught his rivals unaware inside the final kilometre and charged for home unchallenged – opening up a huge advantage as his spent rivals gawped.
The 26-year-old could afford to sit upright and celebrate across the line, with Mike Teunissen (Team Sunweb) winning the scrap for second ahead of Sep Vanmarcke (EF Education First-Drapac p/b Cannondale).
The breakaway were allowed to fight amongst themselves after a promising chase group started squabbling over turns at the front.
Edvald Boasson Hagen (Dimension Date) and Mads Pedersen (Trek-Segafredo) finished fourth and fifth respectively – the latter using up his remaining energy with a desperate burst 1200m from the end.
