Team Sky’s Simon Gerrans secured overall victory in the Tour of Denmark while Rabobank's Theo Bos the final stage.
Daniele Bennati of Leopard Trek had a chance of overhauling Gerrans on the 162km final stage, but failed to pick up the vital bonus seconds in the sprints leaving Gerrans as the victor.
Bennati had trailed by eight seconds going into the final day but fell further behind after losing a sprint to Gerrans.
And when Bos won the final sprint for the line ahead of Colnago duo Sacha Modolo and Manuel Belletti, Gerrans finished safely in the lead group to win by nine seconds.
Team Sky's sporting director Marcus Ljungqvist was full of praise for his men after their final day heroics.
“It was full-on bike racing from the start today. They had to fight for it and work hard to get the intermediate sprint," he said.
"It was a perfect one for us. Simon nipped in front of Bennati and took a bit of his morale I think.
“But Bennati could have still won the race with the 10-second bonus on the line so it wasn’t over until the finish. The rest of the team they did a great job supporting and taking care of Simon, making sure he was in position at all times.
“We were joking that we started a bit slow in this race but as it has gone on it has been really good - all in all a great result.”
