Stage 20, an easy, 133-kilometre ride from Canobio to Cantu, was a well-deserved break for riders, who will need to be at their best for Sunday's grand finale.
Lombardi outsprinted compatriots Eddy Mazzoleni, Giuliano Figueras
and Marco Velo after they had gone clear of the main peloton in
the final 40km to Cantu.
The stage, which featured no major breakaways or surprises, featured the shortest course of the 2003 Giro.
Simoni finished in the main pack and conserved his comfortable advantage in the general classifications. The Italian is still eight minutes and four seconds
ahead of Stefano Garzelli and 8:06 ahead of Yaroslav Popovych of
the Ukraine.
The Giro action resumes on Sunday with the 21st and final stage, a 33-km individual time trial between Idsroscalo and Milan. Follow the LIVE action from 14:00 CET on eurosport.com!
