Chris Froome suffered a painful start to the 101st Giro d’Italia before racing had even begun after crashing during a time trial recon in Jerusalem.
Froome is bidding for his third Grand Tour triumph in a row after capturing the Tour de France and Vuelta in 2017 – but his preparations for the Giro have been shrouded in controversy following his adverse analytical finding (AAF) for salbutamol during Stage 18 of La Vuelta.
The case is yet to be resolved and Froome and Team Sky have faced intense questioning over the affair in recent days, overshadowing their preparations for what could be a titanic battle with reigning champion Tom Dumoulin.
And ahead of Friday’s opening time trial in Jerusalem, Froome had a nightmare moment during the recon.
The 32-year-old appeared to be bruised and cut, suffering damage to his kit as he tested out the 9.9km course.
