There is no doubt that Primoz Roglic (Jumbo-Visma) will refuse to make it remotely easy for Geraint Thomas (Ineos Grenadiers) to canter through for glory at the Giro d'Italia 2023. Roglic still has the Welshman very much in his sights, even if he is 26 seconds back. The 18.6km uphill time trial offers Roglic his last chance to seal a memorable triumph at the Giro.
On a day Santiago Buitrago (Bahrain Victorious) won the queen stage in the Dolomites, Primoz Roglic’s last-ditch attack on the iconic climb of Tre Cima di Lavaredo saw him claw back three seconds on race leader Geraint Thomas to set up a thrilling showdown on Saturday.
Welsh veteran Thomas (Ineos Grenadiers) will enter the decisive 18.6km uphill time trial on the fearsome Monte Lussari with an advantage of 26 seconds on Slovenia’s Roglic (Jumbo Visma) in a winner-takes-all scenario for the climax of the 106th edition of the Giro.
The Slovenian was in bullish mood after Stage 19, telling reporters:
"I’m happy. It was fun and tomorrow we go full again. It’s good, eh, I got a bit of legs back, so tomorrow we go full."
With Sunday’s final stage a pan-flat run around Rome for the sprinters, the general classification battle will almost certainly be decided against the clock on Stage 20 - but who will emerge victorious?
