Jarlinson Pantano takes Stage 5, Alexandre Valverde retains GC lead

Pantano beat UAE Team Emirates’s Vegard Stake Laengen to the line after the pair were the last two standing from the breakaway.

It was his first win since he took a stage victory on the Tour de France in 2016.

"We knew that today would be the day for the breakaway to go until the end and we took the opportunity,” said Pantano post race.

“I know Laengren, we were team-mates at IAM Cycling, so we had a good understanding and worked together quite well. After having some problems after Paris-Nice and feeling a bit sick when I came here, I finally could grab a victory! I had a few rough days indeed, but that's cycling: you have good days and bad days."

Valverde finished eighth to retain the overall lead with Egan Bernal (Team Sky) just 16 seconds back.
