Slovenian veteran and four-time Grand Tour winner Primoz Roglic confirmed on Saturday morning that he will leave Team Jumbo-Visma at the conclusion of the current racing season. Quadruple major champion Primoz Roglic confirmed on Saturday morning that he will leave Team Jumbo-Vismo at the end of the current racing season.
Before today's Giro dell'Emilia got under way, the two-time winner of the single-day event in Bologna gave an interview to RTV Slovenia in which he officially verified the widely-circulating reports that he would leave his current team.
After eight years with the Dutch team, the Slovenian veteran made his point clearly as he confirmed the speculation and rumours.
He said: "I can confirm that I am leaving the team where I am now. I will reveal all the other details after the end of the season, after my last race. Because now I am here with the intention to race, to do what I am here to do, and then the rest."
Rumours had been circulating earlier in the day that Roglic had already signed a multiple-year contract with another team for 2024, but he was unwilling to offer more details.
His current contract runs through to the end of next season, meaning that the team would have had to grant him a release in order to complete a transfer after the current campaign.
Jumbo-Visma posted on social media to make the position clear.
Reports from Global Cycling Network suggest that Roglic's new team will pay him a salary of €6 million over three seasons. That would be a pay packet on a par with Tadej Pogacar, currently the world's highest-paid rider.
Dutch outlet Wielerflits reported that British team Ineos Grenadiers are the leading candidates to sign Roglic for 2024 and beyond.
Meanwhile, Pogacar's agent has previously revealed interest on the part of the British team in signing him. Whether Ineos could afford to sign both remains to be seen.
The news of Roglic's departure comes shortly after rumours that Jumbo-Visma could merge with Soudal Quick-Step.
The story was quickly met with criticism from Former UCI president Brian Cookson, who expressed concerns over the effect on competition of creating one super team.
