Primoz Roglic crowned Tirreno-Adriatico champion as Jasper Philipsen wins final stage and Tom Pidcock crashes

There was plenty of final-stage drama at the Tirreno-Adriatico on Sunday, despite the fact that Primoz Roglic of Jumbo-Visma had already effectively wrapped up the overall victory prior to the Stage 7 sprint. Jasper Philipsen took a thrilling victory from a bunch sprint on the final day of racing, while Britain's Tom Pidcock of the Ineos Grenadiers team crashed out in more late drama.
Tirreno-Adriatico Stage 7 highlights: Philipsen sprints to glory as Roglic takes title
Primoz Roglic (Jumbo-Visma) was crowned the Tirreno-Adriatico 2023 champion after Jasper Philipsen (Alpecin-Deceuninck) sprinted to victory on the final stage on Sunday.
The 33-year-old's triumph was always a formality on the final day of racing after he clinched three successive stage victories prior to Stage 7 to fully establish his dominance in the overall standings.
Roglic simply coasted through the final stage to ensure the victory while an inspired Philipsen sprinted to his second stage win of the race in thrilling fashion as he edged out Dylan Groenewegen (Jayco-AlUla) and Alberto Dainese (Team DSM).
The Slovenian held a commanding 18-second overall lead coming into the day's racing and ended up with the same distance between him and second-placed Joao Almeida.
Crucially, Roglic was triumphant in Tortoreto, Sassotetto and Osimo, respectively, on the three previous days and has now clinched another top title for Jumbo-Visma.
For an overjoyed Philipsen, who ended the race on the perfect high ahead of next Saturday's Milan-San Remo, it was a team effort that he wanted to fully acknowledge.
"We managed to be in a really good position thanks to all the motivation we had from the previous sprint stage - we knew we were able to do it again," he said after the race. "The team and Mathieu (van der Poel) again did an amazing job."

At the stage in the race when the sprinting pack eventually pulled clear, Britain's Tom Pidcock (Ineos Grenadiers) crashed and decided to immediately withdraw from the race.
After the race, Ineos released a relatively positive statement alongside a photo of Pidcock, who was victorious at Strade Bianche last week, giving a thumbs up with a smile.
"Following a crash on the final stage of Tirreno-Adriatico, as a precaution, Tom Pidcock withdrew from the race," the statement read.
"He was treated by our doctor at the team bus having sustained mild abrasions. He’ll be undergoing further assessment and treatment."
