Spanish cyclist Javier Pascual Llorente (Kelme), the only rider to test positive for erythropoietin (EPO) at this year's Tour de France, has been handed an 18-month suspension, Kelme team manager Joan Mas said on Tuesday.
"The rider was notified of his suspension by the national competition committee 10 days ago. He has decided to appeal to the Court of Arbitration," Mas said.
"He is working with his lawyer and they want to show his innocence."
Llorente tested positive for EPO during the 12th stage, a 47-kilometre time trial between Gaillac and Cap'Découverte.
The Spaniard's 2003 season included victories in the Tour of Andalusia and the Tour de Murcia, where he notably won the last stage - a time trial - ahead of Lance Armstrong.
