Vicky Williamson is poised to make her Track World Cup return three years after suffering horrific career-threatening injuries.
The now 25-year-old has been included in the GB Cycling Team for sprint events for the Track World Cup in Hong Kong to complete a miraculous comeback to the sport.
Williamson suffered a broken neck and back, and dislocated pelvis when she crashed in January 2016 during an onium sprint race in Zeddaagse, Rotterdam.
The former World Championship bronze-medallist was millimetres away from paralysis but a long and painstaking road to recovery has led her back to Track World Cup competition – a stage she thought she would never return to.
"There were points when I didn't think I was going to get back to this level but I am just super grateful, and I owe thanks to a lot of people for not only helping me but also believing in me," said Williamson, who married husband Ollie Barnes in July.
"There were quite a few times when it didn’t look like it was going to be possible and I went through quite a few injuries, which you all know about.
"I am super happy to get back and I have not taken anything for granted on this journey.
"It has been a long process and it is such an honour be able to wear a GB skin suit at a World Cup, and it is something I thought I would never do again, so I have got nothing to lose."
