The Vuelta a Espana 2023 is here, as the third Grand Tour of the year gets underway in Barcelona on Saturday, August 26. Remco Evenepoel (Soudal Quick-Step) will be aiming to defend his title, but will be pushed all the way by the Jumbo-Visma duo of Jonas Vingegaard and Primoz Roglic. The British interest will come from 37-year-old Geraint Thomas, while Juan Ayuso will hope to make a big impact.

Evenepoel’s top moments of 2022, including Vuelta a Espana win

The Vuelta a Espana 2023 is about to get underway, with many wondering who can stop Jumbo-Visma from completing a first-ever Grand Tour grand slam?
It has been a dominant year for the Dutch racing team, who would become the first team in the modern era to complete such an incredible feat.
After successfully defending his Tour de France title earlier this year, Jonas Vingegaard will be hoping to follow in Chris Froome's footsteps and complete a Tour and La Vuelta double.
Although he will be pushed all the way by team-mate Primoz Roglic, who will be hoping to follow Alberto Contador's 2008 achievement of winning a Giro d'Italia and Vuelta double.
One man who may have something to say about that is defending champion Remco Evenepoel, who showed just how well equipped he was to deal with everything that the Vuelta can throw at a rider.

Evenepoel aiming to bide his time

Defending champion Evenepoel gave an interesting insight into the tactical approach going into a Grand Tour like La Vuelta.
While retaining the red jersey is his ultimate goal, the Soudal–Quick-Step rider highlighted the importance of not peaking too early.
"Yes, wearing the leader's jersey is a desirable scenario for later stages. In the initial nine days, we'd rather not target it," said Evenepoel in quotes published by idlprocycling.com.
"If we happen to claim it, we'll aim to relinquish it to less threatening contenders as swiftly as possible. The leader's jersey holds significant appeal, and naturally, you want to relish it.
"However, we're not keen on retaining the red jersey during the first week. The same philosophy applies to the white jersey for the best young rider. And if this plan doesn't unfold as intended, we'll adapt to the situation."
