Darts news - Glen Durrant emulates Eric Bristow with third straight BDO world win

Five-times world champion Bristow, who died last April aged 60, claimed three straight titles at Frimley Green in 1984, 1985 and 1986 with 'Duzza' dominating the tournament with victories in 2017, 2018 and 2019.

Durrant had trailed 3-2 against his fellow Englishman Waites, twice a Lakeside champion in 2013 and 2016, but reeled off the final five sets for the trophy and a £100,000 winner's cheque.

Middlesbrough man Durrant averaged 95.19 in the final in what could be his last appearance at the BDO before PDC qualifying school next week. He will be joined by Waites, who collected £35,000 as runner-up, who is also set to make the switch across at Q school in Wigan on January 17.

"That means the Earth and back and to do it against a Lakeside legend like Scott Waites puts the icing on the cake," said 48-year-old Durrant after the win.

"To have my wife and daughter here, I spoke to my mam and dad before I come, I’ve just got the best family base behind me.

"I know I’m not playing (PDC world champion) Michael van Gerwen, Michael Smith and Gary Anderson tonight, but I’m playing legends like Scott Waites and I’m mega happy."

Durrant took control after trailing 3-2 with Waites checkout of 160 in the seventh set a brief moment of relief as his opponent took control, seeing it out from 48 after Waites missed double 18 to force the final into an 11th set.
