She was in a car with her baby as a lorry crashed into it and five other stationary vehicles, according to Canadian police.
Her baby survived the tragic incident and was taken to a local children’s hospital with non-threatening injuries, but Paul was pronounced dead at the scene.
The crash took place in Melancthon Township, Ontario last Tuesday, with Skate Canada leading the tributes for the Sochi 2014 Olympian.
They said in a statement: "It is with a heavy heart that Skate Canada announces the sudden passing of a cherished member of our skating community, Alexandra Paul.
"As we remember Alexandra's contributions to the sport, we also reflect on the camaraderie and sportsmanship she exemplified.
"She was not only an accomplished athlete but also a true role model for aspiring skaters, demonstrating the values of resilience, perseverance, and sportsmanlike conduct.
"Our thoughts are with Alexandra's family, friends, and everyone who was fortunate enough to know her during this difficult time."
Paul competed alongside her husband and skating partner Mitchell Islam, and together they won several international and Canadian Championship medals.
They also represented their country at the 2014 Sochi Olympics, before Paul's retirement in 2016.
Individually, she also won a silver medal at the World Junior Figure Skating Championships in 2010.
