Olympic champion Alina Zagitova battled back from a mistake in her opening jump sequence to take the lead at the Helsinki Grand Prix of Figure Skating after the women's short program.
The Russian attempted a triple lutz-triple loop but her second leap turned into a single.
She recovered her composure to complete the rest of her routine, which included a double axel and a hands-up triple flip.
Japan's Yuna Shiraiwa and Belgian Loena Hendrickx are well-placed to claim their first Grand Prix medals as they occupy the other podium spots.
Shiraiwa sits second, more than five points behind her rival, with Hendrickx close behind in third heading into tomorrow's free skating.
In the pairs the Italian duo of Nicole Della Monica and Matteo Guarise are on top after the short program, with Natalia Zabiiako and Alexander Enbert breathing down their necks in second.
While in the ice dancing Russians Alexandra Stepanova and Ivan Bukin lead the way after the rhythm dance.
The men's competition begins tomorrow, featuring Olympic gold medallist Yuzuru Hanyu, with the women's pairs and ice dancing competitions reaching their conclusion.
