The Premier League’s bottom club were torn apart at will by Jurgen Klopp’s side, with Daniel Sturridge scoring on his return to the starting lineup before James Milner, Emre Can, Divock Origi, Nathaniel Clyne and Kolo Toure all got in on the act.
The result means Villa, currently on 16 points, are seven adrift of 19th-placed Sunderland – and effectively nine points from safety now that they have the worst goal difference in the division (-26).
Speaking afterwards, Garde acknowledged it had been a harrowing afternoon for everyone involved with the club.
"I feel humiliated,” Garde said. “This is very, very painful. It's the worst defeat I've had."
He added: “I’m very said and very frustrated.
"I am sorry for the fans who came to Villa Park. Before the game you could expect the two teams were not on the same level, but after 15 minutes, I don't know what happens.
"I understand the fans' frustration. I don't know who has let down who in this football club. I am trying to concentrate on my job and working with the players who want to fight."
Meanwhile Garde’s opposite number said Liverpool should temper their celebrations despite a morale-boosting scoreline.
"This is not a day for us to sing songs,” Klopp said. “That's partly out of respect for Aston Villa, a great club having a difficult time."
