Toni "doubtful" to be fit for season start
Bayern Munich striker Luca Toni's chances of being fit for the start of the season are "doubtful", according to head coach Ottmar Hitzfeld.
The Italy international, who signed from Fiorentina earlier in the summer, tore muscle fibres below his right knee during a friendly match at the weekend.
The 30-year-old forward expects to be back in training over a week before Bayern's opening match of the season, at home to Hansa Rostock, but Hitzfeld is not convinced he will be match fit by that point.
Hitzfeld said: "It is doubtful whether there is enough time before the start of the season.
"The injury is a setback. Luca needs the preparation time to get back to speed.
"He is lagging behind and this knocks us back."
Hitzfeld may look to his striker Roque Santa Cruz to provide cover duing Toni's recovery, but still does not expect the Brazilian to be at the club for much longer.
He said: "At the moment, we should be happy that we still have another striker under contract.
"We do not plan to keep Roque here for the whole year.
"When Toni and Klose are available, they are number one choices in attack and Lukas Podolski will be pushing into the team too."
