Bayern Munich striker Mario Gomez has revealed that Chelsea had a £35.7 million bid for him turned down in the January transfer window.
Germany international Gomez told Sport Bild that he only heard about the bid from the Premier League champions after Bayern had rejected it, and that he would not have wanted to have left the club in any event.
Chelsea went on to sign Fernando Torres from Liverpool on deadline day for a British record fee of £50m.
"I only found out about the offer after the club had turned it down," Gomez said.
"But it wouldn’t have mattered anyway. I am already at a top club and I am playing the role I always wanted to."
After enduring a difficult first season at Bayern following his German record £25.5m move from Stuttgart in 2009, Gomez has hit fearsome form.
The 25-year-old did not register his first Bundesliga goal of the current season until mid-October, but since striking against Hanover he has fired in 16 goals in his last 13 league games, as well as scoring six goals in as many Champions League appearances this term.
