Fortuna Dusseldorf have punished midfielder Kerem Demirbay in a creative way after he spouted sexist comments to a referee – by making him officiate a girls’ match.
Demirbay, 22, scored twice in his side’s 2-1 win over FSV Frankfurt in the German second division last month, but was dismissed for a second bookable offence by Bibi Steinhaus.
He took offence with the decision and reportedly said women had no place in men’s football.
And although he telephoned Steinhaus to apologise after the match – and expressed his sorrow on Twitter, starting a lengthy post with "I'm extremely sorry for what I said to Ms Steinhaus" – his club have fined him and said he faces a possible five-match ban.
Dusseldorf posted photographs on Facebook of Demirbay officiating a girls’ game, accompanied by the caption: “This is what happens when a young player makes a mistake!”
However, not everyone was convinced he had suitably atoned.
The Facebook post was inundated with comments suggesting it was merely a fashion shoot – Demirbay rocked up wearing a stylish coat, with no referee gear in sight – while others saw the "punishment" as little more than a PR campaign for the club.
