Champions League 2016/17: How does the UEFA Coefficient work? All you need to know
Updated 01/08/2016 at 09:21 GMT
The UEFA Coefficient determines how many teams from each member association qualifies for the Champions and Europa League but how does it work? All you need to know.
UEFA's website informs us that their coefficients are based on "the results of all European clubs in UEFA club competition, determine the number of entries an association is granted for forthcoming seasons and also determine a club’s seeding in club competition draw."
Or in another words, they are a big deal.
For clarity's sake, there are three coefficients but only two are applicable to club football:
- The national team coefficient ranks national teams and impacts on seedings for international qualifying and tournaments.
- The country coefficient ranks member associations on the basis of their collective performance their teams – this impacts on the number of teams each association can enter in the Champions League and Europa League and at what stage of those competitions those teams enter.
- The club coefficient ranks individual clubs and impacts on things like each club’s seeding in European competition.
HOW ARE THE COEFFICIENTS CALCULATED?
The national team coefficient is not applicable to club football but for further details on that, please click here.
Country coefficient
- The coefficient is calculated over a five-year period
- Two points are awarded for a win and one for a draw. However, points are halved for wins and draws accrued in qualifying or play-off rounds
- The number of points awarded each season is then divided by the number of teams that competed in Europe that season from said association
- The resulting figure is then rounded down to three decimal places
- An association’s coefficient is produced by adding the last five seasons coefficients together, before adding any bonus points at the end.
- Bonus points are awarded for the following:
- One bonus point for a reaching the quarter-finals, semi-finals or final of European competition
- Four points for each club that reaches the Group Stage of the Champions League
- Five bonus points for making the last 16 of the Champions League
- If two associations have the same coefficient, the association with the higher coefficient in the most recent season is given preference
- The coefficient determines the number of teams competing European in the season after the next - so 2014/15 is in play for this season
CURRENT TOP 20

Club coefficient
The club coefficient is – like the country coefficient – calculated over the five-year period, and takes into account the points earned by the club over that period and 20% of the club’s country coefficient.
