PSV Eindhoven v Manchester United: Luke Shaw suffers horror leg injury
Updated 15/09/2015 at 23:17 GMT
Manchester United left-back Luke Shaw needed lengthy medical attention and a stretcher retreat after suffering a double leg fracture against PSV Eindhoven in the Champions League.
Shaw lay stricken on the turf following a hefty tackle from Hector Moreno in the hosts' penalty area barely 20 minutes into the Group B match.
The 20-year-old received treatment for 10 minutes before being carried off the pitch clutching an oxygen mask. The club later confirmed the severity of his injury, with Shaw set to undergo surgery in Manchester upon the team's return.
Shaw has started all eight of United’s matches this season, but is now a major doubt to play again this season and contest a spot in England's Euro 2016 squad.
"He has a double leg fracture," Van Gaal said after the match, which United lost 2-1.
"He is in hospital. He will be transferred (to the UK) tomorrow with us or maybe a day later and then operated on in Manchester. It is awful. He was crying."
Van Gaal was visibly unhappy at the tackle by Moreno - who played under him at AZ - but the Dutchman steered clear of shaming the Mexican defender.
"If I say it is a penalty and a red card I am a bad loser, every word is interpreted in the wrong way," he added. "But it was a very bad tackle with two legs."
The world of football was quick to show support for Shaw:
And despite his difficult predicament, the youngster still managed to send out a message of thanks to everyone concerned:
